The City of Santa Clarita is showcasing a new art exhibit, “Surviving Assimilation: The Contemporary Native American Through the Lens of Peggy Fontenot,” on display now through June 5 in the Community Room at the Old Town Newhall Library.

The photographic art exhibit will feature a collection of images portraying the strength of Native Americans in the face of assimilation.

Peggy Fontenot is an award-winning local artist whose photography has been displayed at the Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Eiteljorg and Heard Museums, the Autry National Center, the Museum of History and Art Ontario and the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum.

A free public reception to celebrate the exhibit and Fontenot’s work will be held from on Wednesday, February 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Community Room at the Old Town Newhall Library. Guests will be able to greet Fontenot and enjoy live music and light appetizers.

City’s 2015 Thursdays @ Newhall Series Gears Up for March

Thursday nights will heat up in March as Santa Clarita’s popular Thursdays @ Newhall series, presented by Galpin Subaru, returns to Old Town Newhall on March 5. Several new and returning events will be held on Thursday nights from March through October, including a weekly rotation of ArtSLAM, a new Revved Up car show, SENSES, the ARTree 2015 Speaker Series and the SCVTV Presents OutWest Concert Series.

Art Walk

On the first Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., ArtSLAM will combine forces with JAM Sessions to celebrate art, music and movement. ArtSLAM features art installations by local artists. JAM Sessions is an interactive series inviting residents to release their inner artist through tango, salsa, drumming, square dance and much more. All ArtSLAM is free and open to the public.

The Thursdays @ Newhall series cruises on with Revved Up, a free themed car show held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month. Each event will feature a different genre of top quality cars, plus a live DJ, food trucks and a beer and wine garden for adults. Attendees will be invited to vote for their favorite car, with eligible winners entered for consideration into the annual OTNA Classic Car Show.

Senses Beach Party Crowd

The City’s popular SENSES block party will heat up Main Street once again from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on every third Thursday of the month. The free outdoor events, which draw thousands of attendees each week and will kick off on Thursday, March 19 with a Luck o’ the Irish theme, including live Celtic rock music, as well as food trucks and activities.

JAM Session Farmers Market 2

The ARTree 2015 Speaker Series will feature free lectures and discussions with influential artists and leaders who bring art, arts education and exceptional projects to Santa Clarita. The series will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month. The series begins on February 26 with Moses Mora and Jim Rice from the Bell Arts Factory.

RepTheater

The SCVTV presents the OutWest Concert Series will bring live ticketed music performances to Old Town Newhall on the fourth Thursday of each month. The ongoing music series is held at the Repertory East Playhouse and features well-established musicians, as well as new and emerging vocal artists and music groups in Western genres.

22nd Annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival Preview: VIDEO

This Week in Santa Clarita previews the 22nd Annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, presented by Logix Federal Credit Union, happening April 15-19, at its new location in Old Town Newhall and William S. Hart Park.

New this year to the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival are separately ticketed performances at venues throughout Old Town Newhall.

Admission to the main Cowboy Festival on April 18 and 19 at William S. Hart Park is $10 for adults and $7 for kids 12 and under. Tickets to other performances happening from April 15-19 at venues throughout Old Town Newhall are available and sold separately.

Old Town Newhall Roundabout Named ‘Project of the Year’ by American Public Works Association

Old Town Newhall Roundabout Assistant Engineer Joel Bareng and Project Manager Balvinder Sandhu accept the award on behalf of the City.

The Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) named the City of Santa Clarita’s Newhall Roundabout the “2014 Project of the Year.”  The APWA, which recognizes public agencies for their outstanding projects and programs, presented the award to the project team at the organization’s annual awards luncheon in Lakewood.   The project was also recognized as the “Project of the Year” by the APWA’s High Desert Branch at an event earlier this month.

The Newhall Roundabout Project was completed in January 2014 and has greatly enhanced the walkability of Old Town Newhall by providing a pedestrian-friendly link between Hart Park, the Old Town Newhall Library and the businesses on Main Street.  The project has also enhanced safety in and around the area by allowing for a smoother transition of commuter traffic, emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists traveling in and out of Old Town Newhall.

On Saturday, November 15, Main Street in Old Town Newhall was transformed into a winter wonderland as thousands of lights were illuminated by the Santa Clarita City Council as part of the City’s 2nd annual “Light Up Main Street” event, presented by PayForward.

On Saturday, November 15, hundreds of residents attended the 8th annual Literacy and Arts Festival, presented by the SCV Education Foundation, in partnership with the City of Santa Clarita, held at the Old Town Newhall Library.

This event offered community members an opportunity to explore, play and create the different forms of arts and literacy.

Festival goers also had the opportunity to participate in a bookmark contest and writing contest for a chance to win prizes.
