2012 SCV Film Festival Begins this Thursday with Opening Night Reception

Beginning this Thursday, January 5, the 2012 SCV Film Festival will have its opening night reception from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. for guests with VIP passes at the Repertory East Playhouse

Film Screenings will take place Friday, January 6, through Sunday, January 8. Day passes are $5 for students and seniors and $8 for adults.

Santa Clarita Youth Invited to Compete in NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition

Want a chance to participate in one of the NFL’s longest-standing youth football traditions? The City of Santa Clarita will host a NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition for kids between the ages of 6 and 15 on Wednesday, September 21, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m., at Central Park Fields #7 and #8.

The competition will include boys and girls divisions broken down by age: 8/9, 10/11, 12/13 and 14/15. The winner of each boy’s and girl’s age division will qualify to represent Santa Clarita at the Sectional Competition in October at Jesse Owens County Park. The top four scorers among the Team Championships first-place finalists in each age division will advance to the National Finals, held at an NFL Playoff game in January.

2011 Summer Reading Program to Start on July 1

The Santa Clarita Public Library will launch the 2011 Summer Reading Program on Friday, July 1, at the Canyon Country and Newhall libraries and on Tuesday, July 5, at the Valencia library. This year’s theme, “One World, Many Stories,” will encourage children and teens to explore the wonders of the world and its many cultures through books and an exciting series of library programs.

Each location will feature a series of hands-on programs related to the Summer Reading Program, including weekly craft programs, fun activities related to the theme, Wacky Wednesday events exploring the week’s featured continent, and weekend programs emphasizing the cultures of the world.

Each week of the Summer Reading Program will explore a different continent:

• Week 1 – “G’Day, Australia”
• Week 2 – “Escape to Europe”
• Week 3 – “African Safari”
• Week 4 – “Adventures in Asia”
• Week 5 – “Cruising to North and South America”
• Week 6 – “Chillin’ in Antarctica”

City Offers Santa Clarita Youth Surf Camp in July

The City of Santa Clarita is offering a one week Surf Camp in Oxnard for kids, ages 9-17, beginning Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22.

Transportation to the beach is included with the shuttle departing from the Santa Clarita Activities Center parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 3:30 p.m. daily.

Surfers will be grouped by age, ability, and comfort level and will participate in a wide variety of water and beach activities. First time surfers and boogie boarders will get one-on-one attention with an instructor. Soft boards and rash guards will be provided. The cost is $295 for city residents and $310 for non-residents.

NOMAD LAB Invasion

On Friday, May 6, NOMAD participants showed off their talents at the third annual Valle Del Oro Community Festival! This program gives participants an opportunity to share their personal stories of struggles, and their hopes and dreams for themselves and their community.

For the past 12-weeks, twenty-one NOMAD youth and thirteen volunteers have been preparing and planning for the Festival. NOMAD youth created artwork, short stories, music, and made desserts and food dishes taught in the cooking classes.  Over 100 people attended the festival which included food, and live music by CalArts students
