Around Town: Senator Boxer Visits Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance Facility

On Monday, August 29, United States Senator Barbara Boxer joined Mayor Marsha McLean and the rest of the Santa Clarita City Council for a tour of the City’s Transit Maintenance Facility and a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly completed solar canopy project.

With the expansion of three new solar canopies and additional solar panels, the Solar Canopy Project will generate 97 percent of all electricity needed to power the facility by producing almost 1 million kilowatt hours per year.

The Solar Canopy project is the result of a $4.62 million award the City of Santa Clarita received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Transit Investment in Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) Program.  Santa Clarita was selected as one of 43 agencies to obtain funds through this grant program, receiving the fifth largest award nationwide.

Senator Barbara Boxer to Attend Dedication of Transit Solar Canopy Event Today

The Santa Clarita City Council invites the public to the Transit Maintanence Facility for the Solar Canopy Dedication event which will be held Today at 11:30 a.m.

The event will include remarks from Senator Boxer about the potential for job creation in California through investments in clean energy and transportation infrastructure. 

These new additions, when combined with the Transit Maintenance Facility’s existing solar panel canopy, will generate 97% of all electricity needed to power the facility. As a result, the City will save approximately $135,000 a year in electricity bills.

Around Town: Solar Canopies at the Transit Maintenance Facility

The pictures in this post were taken Thursday, January 6, at the City of Santa Clarita’s Transit Maintenance Facility.

The Transit Maintenance Facility officially broke ground to install three new solar canopies in late October.  With these canopies being installed, the city will save approximately $135,000 a year in electricity bills.  Click here to see the ground breaking.
