Around Town: DFYIT’s ‘Year End Celebration’ at the Activities Center

On Tuesday, May 7, the Drug Free Youth in Town (DFYIT) program hosted its Year End Celebration at the Activities Center.

Mayor Bob Kellar welcomed a packed room of junior high and high school students and their parents.

Students in the DFYIT program debuted the Cardboard Confessions video, a self produced video that the DFYIT participates created during the semester.

Around Town: Residents Provide Feedback at Second Rivendale Master Plan Meeting

Yesterday, staff and and community members attended a  meeting to share their ideas and suggestions on the master plan for the 60-acre Rivendale Park and Open Space at City Hall.

Participants included numerous individuals representing the arts, the environment, trail users and volunteers.

Suggestions ranged from clearing the buildings from the front of the property, to the development of a performance and festival complex with an amphitheater and concession building.

On Thursday, April 18, Mayor Bob Kellar and staff from the Santa Clarita Public Library honored over 240 volunteers at the first annual Volunteer Appreciation event entitled “Our Volunteers are World Class” hosted at the Old Town Newhall Library.

City Librarian Ed Kieczykowski acknowledged volunteers for their commitment to the daily operations and programs at the Santa Clarita Public Library.

It’s official, the Canyon Country BevMo is now open! A brief ceremony was held Friday, April 26, in which Councilmember Marsha McLean, City Manager Ken Striplin and Assistant City Manager Frank Oviedo joined officials from BevMo to open the store.

Over 100 eager shoppers anxiously waited to be the first to shop at the new location.

BevMo is located in the Golden Valley Shopping Center and is the second location in the Santa Clarita Valley and first in the City of Santa Clarita.

Grand Prize Winner “Recycle Robot”

On Saturday, April 13, several community members helped judge in the City’s cArt aRt contest at the annual Earth Arbor Day Festival. The contest involved transforming recycling carts into vibrant pieces of art using paint, art supplies, recycled items, and creativity to increase awareness of reusing and recycling household items.

All submissions were on display at the festival and received cash prizes, here are the winners in the following categories:

Around Town: Central Park Hosts Santa Clarita Men’s Classic Softball Tournament

On Saturday, April 6, the City hosted the Santa Clarita Men’s Classic Softball Tournament at Central park.

Co-sponsored by the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation, 21 local teams competed against teams from San Diego, Fillmore, Lancaster, Lompoc, Glendale and Simi Valley.

This one-day tournament had 2,500 participants and spectators throughout the day.

Last night, the 20th annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, presented by Logix Federal Credit Union, kicked off with the City’s monthly Senses block party in Old Town Newhall.

Mayor Bob Kellar and the Santa Clarita City Council inducted Academy Award winning actor Lee Marvin, actor Rodolfo Acosta, and cowboy singer Stuart Hamblen into the Walk of Western Stars.

There was fun activities, live musical performances by Keesha Scott Hogan and Dawson’s Gang, food trucks and line dancing.

On Saturday, April 13, the City of Santa Clarita held its annual Earth Arbor Day Festival, presented by the SCV Family of Water Suppliers, at Central Park.

Thousands of residents thoughout the day attended the festival and participated in a wide variety of fun activities while to learn how to stay green and keep the environment clean.

There was also a recycled art gallery on display, as well as a cArt aRt contest that showcased resident’s artwork on recycling bins.

A popular feature of the event is the free mulch and one gallon tree give aways.

Around Town: Thursdays At Newhall Presents GREEN Slam

Last Thursday, the streets of Old Town Newhall featured fun, interactive environmental activites, as well as green art exhibits at the City’s Green SLAM, part of Thursdays At Newhall.

Festivalgoers experienced recycled sculptures, re-purposed shoe art, a raw fashion show, and over 20 green artists’ art displays, exhibits, and installations.

Around Town: Eggstravaganza Volunteers Rise to the “Egg-casion”

On March 30, the City of Santa Clarita held its annual Eggstravaganza Egg Scramble at Central Park. 55 volunteers participated in this year’s event with 42 stuffing thousands of eggs in preparation of the event and 13 distributing eggs and prizes across the field at Central Park.

Volunteers also monitored the fields keeping the 2,500 participants behind the lines until Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commissioner Duane Harte gave the signal for the festivities to begin. Once the event was over, volunteers worked alongside staff to clean up the fields.

There are many volunteering opportunities through the City of Santa Clarita’s upcoming events like the 20th annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, Earth Arbor Day Festival and the 2013 Amgen Tour of California.
