City’s Monthly Block Party ‘Senses’ Transforms Main Street into Mardi Gras Festival Last Night

Last night, the streets of Old Town Newhall transformed into a New Orleans scene as community members celebrated local Mardi Gras festivities at the City’s monthly SENSES block party .

Over 1,000 people attended the free, monthly block party and enjoyed  live music from Vaud and the Villains, a 19-piece New Orleans Orchestra and Cabaret Show, carnival mask making booths from ARTree, photos with costumed performers, food trucks, and local business discounts.

Around Town: ‘Love Your Library’ Event

On Monday, February 13, the Santa Clarita Public Library hosted a “Love Your Library” Open House at all three libraries. Guests of all ages enjoyed refreshments, fun activities and special readings from Mayor Laurie Ender, Councilmember Marsha McLean and Councilmember Bob Kellar.

Mayor Ender read popular children’s books at the Valencia Library.

City Librarian Ed Keiczykowski and Friends of the Library Liason Robin Hoklotubbe greeted attendees.

Valencia Library Branch Manager Nancy Kerr also read to parents and children at the event.

Fun activities like arts and crafts were enjoyed by guests.

Around Town: Lyons/I-5 Interchange Beautification Project

The City of Santa Clarita is currently beautifying the on- ramps and -off-ramps at the Interstate 5 and Lyons Avenue interchange.

This project began in late November and is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2012.

The Santa Clarita Metrolink station is tied closely with the Santa Clarita Transit routes, allowing passengers to travel with ease to their destinations.

The First two pictures in this post are of Main Street in Old Town Newhall. The pictures were taken from the new Old Town Newhall Library which currently is under construction.

Main Street incorporates wooden sidewalks, brick pavers, new landscape, hardscape, street furniture, new and decorative streetlights to make the area pedestrian friendly.

The City of Santa Clarita, the County of Los Angeles, and the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation held a Enterprise Zone Breakfast Workshop this morning in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Keynote speaker Jon Collard of American Tax Incentives discussed how qualified businesses can reduce their state income tax through the Enterprise Zone program. Over 30 different businesses in Santa Clarita showed up to learn about the Enterprise Zone program.

First Annual Cultural Landscape ‘Art on Canvas’ Contest Gallery

The 1st Annual Cultural Landscape “Art on Canvas” contest gallery was held on Main Street in Old Town Newhall last night in conjuction with the First Thursdays Art Walk.

Twenty pieces of artwork from three age categories ranging from kindergarten to high school were displayed for the community to view. Spectators had the opportunity to pick the Peoples Choice award for thier favorite masterpeice.

The Peoples Choice winner for the Kindergarden through 4th grade category was Madeline Sanchez, who is seen above getting her award from Art Commissioner Susan Shupiro.

The winner for the Peoples Choice award for the 5th through 8th grade category was Cassidy Oliver.

The Peoples Choice winner for the highschool category was Michelle Shin.

Around Town: ‘A Ride for Life’ Cycling Benefit Event

January 4, 2012

On December 31, A Ride for Life cycling event was held at Central Park benefitting the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita.

Jim Ventress of the Boys and Girls Club and Councilmember Bob Kellar hold the American flag during the national anthem.

Event Director Luther White addresses the crowd.

Former Major League Baseball player Barry Bonds participated in this years event.
