Traffic Advisory: Lyons Avenue Repavement Project to Begin May 14 through Early June

Road construction will take place westbound and eastbound on Lyons Avenue, between Wiley Canyon Road and Interstate 5, from Monday, May 14, until early June as part of a roadway repaving project.  Drivers should anticipate nighttime traffic delays Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Santa Clarita City Council Community Recognitions: May 8th

At last nights City Council Meeting, Mayor Frank Ferry and the Santa Clarita City Council recognized local residents for their accomplishments in helping to make Santa Clarita a better place.

The City Council recognized the winners of the Library Bookmark Contest.

The Real Life Church and the Habitat for Humanity were also recognized for their efforts towards Habitat for Heroes.

City Council Honors Local Teens at SCV Teen Hero Recognition Ceremony

On Monday, May 7, a group of local teens were recognized by the Santa Clarita City Council, along with representatives from Congressman Buck McKeon, Senators George Runner and Tony Strickland, Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, and L.A. County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, at the SCV Teen Hero Recognition Ceremony held at the Santa Clarita Activities Center.

These teens were selected by school administrators and community leaders for overcoming obstacles in their lives and being good role models to their peers and classmates. Throughout the year, the Anti-Gang Task Force “shares their stories” in The-Signal newspaper in an effort to encourage their progress and inspire other youth to make positive choices and to persevere.

100% containment was reached at 11 pm Tuesday, May 8.

MAY 8, 2012—8:15 P.M(UPDATE)

From Metrolink:

  • All trains are making their way to Lancaster with no restrictions.
  • There are still passengers traveling into Los Angeles Union Station via bus.
  • There should be no issues for tomorrow’s Metrolink service from today’s disruption.

There will be no further updates from Metrolink this evening.

Last Day to Purchase Tickets for SCV Dodger Day is This Thursday, May 10, at Noon

The last day to purchase discounted tickets for the 35th Annual Santa Clarita Dodger Day is Thursday, May 10, at noon.  The Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals; both teams are in first place in their respective divisions.

The game will take place on Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the  Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.

Around Town: Beautification Project Now Completed at Lyons/I-5 Interchange

The City of Santa Clarita has recently completed the Lyons/I-5 Interchange Beautification Project. The beautification project began in late November. The Santa Clarita City Council will hold a special ribbon cutting ceremony on June 28 at 10 a.m.

As travelers can now see, the on and off ramps now have newly planted trees, shrubs and different landscaping around the project area.

City Invites Residents to Join Wildlife Ecologist in Discussion of Mountain Lions May 15

The City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clara River Watershed Conservancy are inviting residents to come join National Park Service wildlife ecologist, Dr. Seth Riley, in a discussion about Lions in the Landscape, happening Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Activities Center.

Come listen to Dr. Riley discuss his decade long research of the mountain lion in the Santa Monica Mountains, he’ll discuss how large landscapes are important to help preserve these beautiful animals.

Online Registration for City Aquatics Classes Opens Today, All Other Classes Open Online Wednesday

The City of Santa Clarita’s Summer Seasons catalog offers residents summer art, education, sports, recreation, excursions and day camp classes throughout the summer season. Online registration for summer aquatic classes is now open. Online registration for all other classes starts tomorrow, May 9, at 8 a.m.

Residents who want to mail-in their registration can do so on Monday, May 14. Open registration and walk-in registration begins on Monday, May 21. Community members interested in enrolling in a class are encouraged to use the City’s online system, which offers a fast and convenient registration process.

Around Town: Santa Clarita Community Center Hosts 6th Annual Pride Day

The Santa Clarita Community Center hosted its 6th Annual Pride Day event on Saturday, April 28. The event drew over 150 volunteers as young as 5 years of age to help beautify the neighborhood adjacent to the Community Center.

Residents were invited to dispose bulky items into bins located at the Community Center.

Waste Management provided the bins, which were quickly filled by residents.

Over 100 volunteers and Community Center staff worked to remove weeds and debri to later pour mulch leading to Creek View park.

Togas will rule the street for this months Toga! Toga!, greek themed, SENSES block party coming to Main Street on Thursday, May 17, from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. in Old Town Newhall.
