Saturday, May 18, hundreds of volunteers joined Mayor Pro-Tem Laurene Weste and Councilmember Marsha McLean to build homes and lend support for local veterans as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Habitat for Heroes program. The event was hosted at College of the Canyons.

Known as WE Build, or the Women’s Empowerment Build, the event was chaired by Cheri Fleming and designed to spotlight women in unconventional roles.

Mayor Pro Tem Weste spoke about her role on the Santa Clarita City Council, with other guest speakers including Rocket Scientist Sharon Langenbeck Ph.D. and NFL Network Host and Reporter Lindsay Rhodes.
An event highlight included comments from Millie Diaz Taylor, a World War II Veteran who served as a Navy nurse for three years and is also a Gold Star Family member (she lost her son in Vietnam). Her words were inspirational and her sparkle and smile encouraged all in attendance.

On Thursday, May 16, City Manager Ken Striplin guest appeared on SCV Today’s 100th episode with host Dave Caldwell and Tami Edwards. Striplin presented the studio with a plaque congratulating SCV Today on their 100th episode.

Sponsored by Sisters Cities International, local youth were encouraged to enter pieces that reflected how exchanges of people and ideas facilitate community development and educational opportunities. Submissions illustrated the long-term impact that exchanges have had on the participant or his or her community.

On display were works of art and essays from the local youth as well as contest winners from the Philippine city of Sariaya, one of Santa Clarita’s two sister cities.

Sisters Cities International is a non-profit organization that fosters partnerships among communities around the globe to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation – one individual, one community at a time. Currently, the City of Santa Clarita has two international Sister Cities in Tena, Ecuador and Sariaya, Philippines.

On Thursday, April 18, Mayor Bob Kellar and staff from the Santa Clarita Public Library honored over 240 volunteers at the first annual Volunteer Appreciation event entitled “Our Volunteers are World Class” hosted at the Old Town Newhall Library.
City Librarian Ed Kieczykowski acknowledged volunteers for their commitment to the daily operations and programs at the Santa Clarita Public Library.
The Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library were also recognized for their outstanding fundraising efforts and community outreach programs.

On Saturday, April 27, Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar led a community bike ride from the Iron Horse Trailhead in Santa Clarita.
The ride was held in anticipation of the 2013 Amgen Tour of California, for which Santa Clarita will serve as a stage host on Tuesday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 15.
Riders had a chance to meet and greet the Mayor and learn more about the upcoming Amgen Tour of California race.
Dozens of riders rode the 6 mile course led by Mayor Kellar and other City representatives who ensured a fun and safe ride.

On Saturday, April 27, the City of Santa Clarita held its 36th Annual SCV Dodger Day at Dodgers Stadium. Over 1,000 Santa Clarita residents watched the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Milwaukee Brewers.

On Thursday, April 25, the Drug Free Youth in Town (DFYIT) program held its Life Lines assembly at Sulphur Springs Elementary School.
Life Lines is a program that is run by the DFYIT junior high kids that teaches 6th grade students on what to expect when transitioning to junior high and how to deal with the pressures of alcohol and drugs.
Videos were shown about drugs and alcohol, as well as interactive activities for the elementary students to do and learn about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol.
