Lady Bugs to the Rescue

July 23, 2010

Lady bugs and lace wings were released earlier this month to help control pests.

To combat a recent infestation of tree pests caused by heavy winter rainfall and late season spring rains, Urban Forestry staff released thousands of beneficial insects on trees maintained by the Urban Forestry Division this past week. The release of 438,000 lady bugs and 15,000 lace wings will help control pests, such as white flies and aphids.

A City worker is seen releasing insects to help control pests such as aphids and white flies.

These pests secrete a substance called honeydew, causing a sticky sap to fall from the leaves of infested trees. Releasing beneficial insects will ensure a healthy tree population. This was the first of three scheduled beneficial insect releases in the City. Future releases will be conducted with the assistance of community volunteers.
