VIP Hard Hat Tour Offers First-Hand Glimpse of Cross Valley Connector

 The City of Santa Clarita hosted a VIP Hard Hat Tour yesterday for the nearly completed Cross Valley Connector. The brief event took guests on a walking tour of the 1,100 foot-long Golden Vally Road bridge to learn about the 8-mile  Cross Valley Connector road.

The bridge is the final leg of the roadway linking Golden Valley Road and Bouquet Canyon Road/Newhall Ranch Road. The City will host a Grand Opening for the Cross Valley Connector on Saturday, March 27, 2010 to oficially open the long awaited road to the public.

Newhall Library Groundbreaking Marks New Chapter for Old Town Newhall

City Council. Officials and Local Dignitaries shovel the first pile of dirt for the construction project.

 

The City hosted the Groundbreaking event for the new Old Town Newhall Library this past Tuesday, March 16. The  larger, two-story, modernized facility will better suit the growing needs of the community and the environment serving as the City’s second LEED-certified building. 

A chalked outline shows the "footprint" of where the Library will one day stand.

 

The new Old Town Newhall Library will house a book and media capacity of more than 135,000 items, 190 reader seats, 68 public computers, and 110 meeting seats. It will include a number of resources and amenities, including a Children’s Library, Teen Area, Technology Center, Community Meeting Room, Browsing and Reading Lounge, Homework Center, Exhibition Gallery and more. 

The Old Town Newhall Library, as it will one day appear.

 

 The new Old Town Newhall Library will be situated on the corner of Main Street and Lyons Avenue in Old Town Newhall.

‘Hit the Trail’ Community Bike Ride This Saturday

The City of Santa Clarita and Santa Clarita’s Hometown Station KHTS AM 1220 are inviting residents to head out and Hit the Trail this Saturday, March 20. Excellent weather is forecasted for the 3rd annual community bike ride, which kicks off promptly at 10 a.m. from three convenient starting points across the City. The guided ride will culminate with an exciting Bridgeport Park Rally complete with giveaways, food, vendors and activities. 

The Santa Clarita Velo will be helping guide riders to Bridgeport Park and will have a booth onsite.

All routes finish at Bridgeport Park with a welcome by Mayor Laurene Weste and event host KHTS AM 1220 and Rally with food and giveaways from local vendors.  The first 100 participants to arrive will also receive vouchers for a free Kids’ Meal from Route 66 and coupons for a free small yogurt from Golden Spoon.

Newhall Bike has participated in "Hit the Trail" since the ride began three years ago. They'll be on-site with a booth and available for safety inspecitions.

There will be plenty of activities at the Bridgeport Park Rally, including all- age Tricycle Races and a raffle for exciting prizes. Free sandwiches will be provided by Jersey Mike’s, as well as drink samples from Juice It Up!, complimentary water from CLWA and more. Local cycling businesses and organizations will be on hand, including the Santa Clarita Valley Velo, Santa Clarita Bike Coalition, and Newhall Bike, which will offer free bike safety checks.

Green Energy Incentive Program Rewards Eco-Friendly Businesses

The City's Green Energy Incentive Program offers grants of up to $25,000 for eco-friendly upgrades.

The City of Santa Clarita will host an informational workshop this Thursday, March 18 to introduce local businesses to the City’s new Green Energy Incentive Program. The cost-sharing program offers grants of up to $25,000 to local businesses  that undertake projects designed to reduce total energy use, greenhouse gas emissions or fossil fuel emissions, or improve energy efficiency. 

The Green Energy Incentive Program is part of the City's 21 Point Business Plan for Progress.

This Thursday’s workshop will be hosted at Santa Clarita City Hall’s first floor Century Room from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. and again from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.  Businesses must attend the workshop to be eligible for grant funding and may RSVP to Christa Wasson, Project Technician for the City’s Economic Development Division, at (661) 286-4065 or cwasson@santa-clarita.com to reserve a spot.

Tickets on Sale for Youth Sports Clipper Day

Catch the Clippers vs. the Warriors at the Staples Center on March 28 for Youth Sports Clipper Day.

Tickets are now available for the City of Santa Clarita’s Youth Sports Clipper Day, featuring the Los Angeles Clippers vs. the Golden State Warriors at the Staples Center on Sunday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. Several ticket options are available for the event at up to $25 off the original ticket price, including 100 Level Loge Endzone ($55), 200 Level ($35) and 300 Level ($13). 

$1 from each ticket sale will be donated to the City's S.C.O.R.E. program to help local underprivileged kids participate in City Youth Sports programs.

Local kids participating in the City’s 2010 Youth Sports Programs will be entered in a drawing to take part in an NBA players’ fan tunnel at the game. The last day to purchase tickets is March 14, 2010. Tickets for the Youth Sports Clipper Day can be purchased at the Registration Counter at the City’s Sports Complex Aquatic Center.

Celebrate Birthdays with “Parties in the Park”

'Parties in the Park' allow local kids to "own" the City's Skate Park for two hours.

The City of Santa Clarita is now accepting reservations for birthday parties at the City’s Skate Park. Held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays from April through mid-October, the ”Parties in the Park“ allow residents to rent out the popular Skate Park for a private, two-hour birthday bash with up to 20-25 guests. For a great price, Parties in the Park include supervision, a private canopy, tables and chairs, exclusive use of the Skate Park, and a commemorative Skate Park t-shirt for the birthday guest of honor.

Parties in the Park are available to kids of all ages and experience levels.

In addtion to the provided party perks at the Skate Park, party-goers can also enjoy birthday food and festivities in the adjacent open-play grass area. Party in the Park hosts may also bring along their favorite party favors for their private bash, including cake, balloons, food,  and more to celebrate in style. City’s ‘Skateboard I’ Class Helps Beginners Bust a Move

The Skate Park is a popular spot- Skateboard I class helps beginners learn tips and tricks without the crowd.

The City is now offering Skateboard I classes to help beginner skaters learn the ropes with less pressure. The classes are offered at the City’s Skate Park in two age groups (7-12 and 13-17) and are hosted on Saturdays from 8:00-9:00 a.m., from April 3 – 24 and May 5 – 22.  The class teaches a host of beginner skate tips, including pushing, riding, tack turns, switch turns, safe approaches to ramps and proper foot placement (regular and goofy), plus tricks like ollies and drop-ins. The Skateboard I class also features fun perks, including supervised huck jams similar to Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom HuckJam.
