One of the 200 bills signed late Sunday night by the Governor was AB 110, authored by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and supported by the City of Santa Clarita to add Elsmere Canyon back into the Rim of the Valley corridor. The bill is part of Santa Clarita’s decades-long effort to protect and preserve Elsmere Canyon, which is partially in the Angeles National Forest near the terminus of Newhall Avenue and SR 14.
The Parks and Open Space: Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor, calls for a revision of the boundaries by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy of the Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor, in the vicinity of Placerita Canyon and SR 14, including Whitney Canyon, to include these areas and their watersheds.
The Santa Clarita City Council approved the bill as a sponsor on January 27, 2009. AB 110 repeals language placed into state law in 1999 that prohibits Elsmere Canyon from being included within the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy’s Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor because at that time Elsmere Canyon was under active consideration as a landfill site.
