As a follow-up to the City of Santa Clarita’s successful Immature Teen Brain on Pot symposium held in August of 2015, the City will host Marijuana: Hidden in Plain Sight on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 6 p.m. in Council Chamber at Santa Clarita City Hall.
As part of the hard-hitting annual Heroin Kills series, the City’s follow-up drug awareness event will be led by Detective Bill Velek from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department. Detective Velek works closely with the Sheriff’s Department’s Juvenile Intervention Team (J-Team), where he works to divert first-time juvenile offenders from the criminal justice system to drug education and treatment.
Simply because marijuana can be deemed ‘legal’ with a prescription, this does not make it safe or smart. This common misconception can lead to other drug experimentation and unsafe behaviors. It is not uncommon to see teens stop the maturing process when they start smoking marijuana. This discussion will cover valuable information to help parents and members of the community recognize the warning signs of drug use. Detective Velek will also share the current trends on teen drug use to ensure the community stays informed and educated, as well as share common hidden places for drugs.
