Halloween is this Saturday and most families are excited to participate in the long-standing tradition of children dressing in costumes and walking door-to-door throughout the community to get treats.

While we are eager to observe this tradition, here is an important statistic to keep in mind; children are four times more likely to be struck by a car on Halloween night than any other night of the year.

The City of Santa Clarita and the unincorporated communities of the Santa Clarita Valley are sending the message, “Slow down and watch for Children” on Halloween.  It is important for all of us to adhere to a few rules so that everyone can experience a safe and enjoyable Halloween.

Motorists

  • Remain alert! There are thousands of children walking in the community wearing clothing that may not be bright in color.
  • Look for children darting out from between parked cars.
  • Use caution when entering and exiting your driveway.
  • Don’t text and drive.
  • Above all, slow down while driving in the community.

Parents

  • Make sure you ask children to walk instead of run.
  • Select a costume for your child to wear that has bright colors.
  • Ensure your children only visit well-lit streets.
  • Stay on the sidewalk, look both ways before crossing the street, and use crosswalks when crossing the street.
