Santa Clarita Library Invites ‘Anime and Manga Fans’ to Join Anime Club

The Santa Clarita Public Library is inviting Anime fans to join the Anime Club, which have meetings held at the Canyon Country Library and at the Valencia Library. Teens can watch television shows and movies featuring their favorite Anime titles and characters, discuss Manga with fellow fans, try authentic asian snacks and suggest titles fans would like to see at your local library.

There are two locations and times Anime and Manga fans can meet for the Anime Club:

  • Canyon Country Library – 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. every 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month.
  • Valencia Library – 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. every 3rd Thursday of each month.

Around Town: Newhall Community Center Youth Collect Over 12,100 Cans in Recycling Campaign

On Friday, May 18, the Newhall Community Center kids enjoyed a pizza party and foosball tournament in celebration of completing their first-ever recycling campaign in honor of America Recycles Day, which began in early November 2011.

Collecting over 12,500 bottles and cans, youth more than doubled their original goal of 5,000 items, and will use the recycling money to purchase games for the Community Center.

Waste Management also presented the Community Center with a surprise $500 donation to fund future programs and activities.

City Hosts Annual Eggstravaganza Egg Hunt at Central Park April 7

The City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with the Saugus Action Committee, is hosting the annual Eggstravaganza event on Saturday, April 7, beginning at 10 a.m. at Central Park.

Families can come out and have a great time collecting eggs and have an opportunity to meet the “Bunny” for a photo. There is no registration required. The event is free and open to the public.

Sister Cities International Hosts 24th Annual Youth Artist Showcase

Since 1988, the Sister Cities International Young Author Showcase has encouraged youth from around the globe to consider the honorable mission of Sister Cities International and express their interpretation of that mission promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding, cooperation through one individual, one community at a time.

The 2012 theme is an opportunity for participants to use artwork to express how communication, technology, and individual initiative can lead to dramatic social change. Submissions can highlight the participants experience with social media, how creating change in their community, or how global communication and exchange has had an impact on their lives.

Mayor Laurie Ender on hand to Recognize Young Artists at Cultural Landscape Awards

On Monday, February 27, Mayor Laurie Ender recognized local young artists as the City of Santa Clarita, and the Santa Clarita Valley Human Relations Forum, held the 2012 Cultural Landscape Awards at the Santa Clarita Activities Center. The Awards recognized participants on the Art on Canvas, Through the Lens, and Pen & Paper programs for submissions that best represented this year’s theme, “The Colors of Friendship.”

First, second, and third place winners received a certificate and monetary award.  Matching donations also were awarded to their schools to support arts, photography, and creative writing programs.

The Cultural Landscape programming is designed to teach students tolerance and cultural diversity through artistic and creative outlets.

Yesterday, the Santa Clarita Public Library hosted an exclusive storytelling event with award-winning performer Michael McCarty at the Valencia Library.  Known for his engaging style, McCarty shared African-American stories, International Folktales, and historical and scientific accounts with parents and children, which are drawn from his personal experiences as a world traveler.

Last Monday, the City of Santa Clarita hosted a Youth Sports President’s Day Skills Challenge at the Santa Clarita Activities Center.

Players of all ages participated in team building challenges along with individual skill challenges.

Event sponsor Chick-fil-A was on hand to feed players and keep their energy levels up.

At the end of the event, players were awarded trophies for completing events and challenges.

The National Inclusion Project Partners with the City of Santa Clarita

The City of Santa Clarita’s Inclusion Program was awarded a $9,500 grant and was selected as one of 66 nationwide recreational programs in 30 states to partner with the National Inclusion Project to implement, “Let’s ALL Play—Inclusion in Recreational Programs.” The City’s participation in this program will provide children with special needs an enjoyable summer camp experience in a friendly and inclusive setting.
