Around Town: ‘Love Your Library’ Event

On Monday, February 13, the Santa Clarita Public Library hosted a “Love Your Library” Open House at all three libraries. Guests of all ages enjoyed refreshments, fun activities and special readings from Mayor Laurie Ender, Councilmember Marsha McLean and Councilmember Bob Kellar.

Mayor Ender read popular children’s books at the Valencia Library.

City Librarian Ed Keiczykowski and Friends of the Library Liason Robin Hoklotubbe greeted attendees.

Valencia Library Branch Manager Nancy Kerr also read to parents and children at the event.

Fun activities like arts and crafts were enjoyed by guests.

Award-Winning Storyteller Michael D. McCarty Performs International Folktales at Valencia Library February 23

Children from kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to an exclusive storytelling event with award-winning performer Michael McCarty at the Valencia Library on Thursday, February 23, at 4 p.m. No RSVP is necessary for this special storytelling event.

Known for his engaging style, McCarty shares African-American stories, International Folktales, and historical and scientific accounts with children, which are drawn from his personal experiences as a world traveler. McCarty’s storytelling style is best described as energetic and engaging, as he often seeks audience participation to illustrate his tales and sagas.

Santa Clarita Valencia Library Offers Four Book Clubs for Youth and Families

The Santa Clarita Valencia Library is offering four book clubs for youth and family to join beginning January through May.

  • Harry Potter Book Club - Get together every third Thursday of every month, January through May, from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. to discuss all books of the Harry Potter series beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at the Valencia Library
  • Science Book Club – Explore books about science, technology and inventions every third Wednesday every month from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Valencia Library.
  • Family Read Aloud Book Club – Families can enjoy a monthly sample of classic and new read-aloud books every fourth Wednesday from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Valencia Library.
  • Teen Genre Book Club – Select teen books chosen every month and discuss with friends every fourth Wednesday from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Valencia Library.

Around Town: Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library Kick-Off Meeting

On Thursday, December 15, the City of Santa Clarita invited residents to the first Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library kick-off meeting that was held at the Valencia Library.

The new Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library is envisioned as a member-supported, non-profit organization that advocates, fundraises, and provides critical support for the Santa Clarita Public Library and related literary and educational programs.

It is anticipated that the group will provide the community with opportunities to invest in the success of the Santa Clarita Public Library through volunteering.

The kick-off meeting included a special welcome from Mayor Laurie Ender.

The Mayor presented a check to the Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library.

The City also celebrated its 24th birthday with refreshments and cake.

Residents Invited to ‘Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library’ Kick-Off Meeting December 15

The City of Santa Clarita is inviting residents to a special kick off meeting for the new Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library.  The kick off meeting is slated for the City’s 24th birthday, Thursday, December 15, at 7 p.m. at the Valencia Library.

The now-forming Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library is open to all those interested in supporting our public library. The kick off meeting will include a special welcome from Mayor Pro Tem Laurie Ender, as well as a program overview of the Friends group. Refreshments will be served including a birthday cake to help celebrate the City’s birthday.

City Launches Community Services Survey

The City of Santa Clarita is encouraging residents to provide feedback on local community programs and services by completing a 13 question survey open to the public now through November 30, 2011. The goal of the survey is to enhance City programs and services to meet the needs of the community.

Participants who submit a completed survey with a valid email address will be entered into a drawing to win two free tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood. Surveys completed by hand should be mailed to City Hall before November 30, 2011.

Around Town: New Childrens Books Arrive at Canyon Country Library

The City of Santa Clarita received 1,507 childrens books currently being stocked at the Canyon Country library.  This shipment is part of a total of 3,000 new childrens books being added to the three libraries this week.  An additional 1,500 childrens books were added to the Valencia Library.

 

All Santa Clarita Public Libraries Now Open

Mayor Marsha McLean was joined by Mayor Pro Tem Laurie Ender, Councilmembers Frank Ferry, Bob Kellar and Laurene Weste along with members of the community for the official ribbon cutting.

With the opening of the Valencia Library this morning, all Santa Clarita Public Libraries are now open to the public.

The Santa Clarita Youth Symphony Chamber Group performed prior to the official ribbon cutting for the Valencia branch.

Juggler David Cousin helped welcome residents to the library.

 

Visitors to the Valencia Library will notice new furniture and decor and all City of Santa Clarita Public Libraries now have free Wi-Fi, faster computers and are open on Sundays. The Santa Clarita City Council also spent $900,000 on new materials.

‘Cooling Centers’ Available to Residents in Wake of Heat Wave

The Valencia Library and SCV Senior Center will be available to residents as "cooling centers" for periods of time during the heat wave.

The City of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health are reminding residents to take necessary precautions as the summer sets in and temperatures rise to uncomfortable numbers. To help residents beat the heat, two “Cooling Center” locations will be open to offer relief.

  • The Valencia Library will be open as a Cooling Center Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The SCV Senior Center will be open as a Cooling Center Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Both locations will be open during the extreme heat weather conditions. If you are planning to visit one of these Cooling Centers, it is advisable that you call in advance to make sure there is still seating available. The Senior Center is located at 22900 Market Street and the number is (661) 259-9444. The Valencia Library is located at 23743 West Valencia Blvd, and the number is (661) 259-8942.
