Around Town: Newhall Community Center Youth Collect Over 12,100 Cans in Recycling Campaign

On Friday, May 18, the Newhall Community Center kids enjoyed a pizza party and foosball tournament in celebration of completing their first-ever recycling campaign in honor of America Recycles Day, which began in early November 2011.

Collecting over 12,500 bottles and cans, youth more than doubled their original goal of 5,000 items, and will use the recycling money to purchase games for the Community Center.

Waste Management also presented the Community Center with a surprise $500 donation to fund future programs and activities.

Santa Clarita Valencia Library Offers Four Book Clubs for Youth and Families

The Santa Clarita Valencia Library is offering four book clubs for youth and family to join beginning January through May.

  • Harry Potter Book Club - Get together every third Thursday of every month, January through May, from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. to discuss all books of the Harry Potter series beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at the Valencia Library
  • Science Book Club – Explore books about science, technology and inventions every third Wednesday every month from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Valencia Library.
  • Family Read Aloud Book Club – Families can enjoy a monthly sample of classic and new read-aloud books every fourth Wednesday from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Valencia Library.
  • Teen Genre Book Club – Select teen books chosen every month and discuss with friends every fourth Wednesday from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Valencia Library.

Primetime Preschool classes are a great way to ease into kindergarten for the little ones

The City of Santa Clarita will hold a Primetime Preschool Class for pre-kindergarten kids beginning the week of August 31, 2009. The 12 week parent-involved program is designed to prepare children for Kindergarten and will help provide opportunities for social and emotional growth, cognitive learning experiences and creative expression. More details on cost, how to register and schedule can be found here.
