FALL INTO FUN AT THE CANYON COUNTRY COMMUNITY CENTER

Santa Clarita residents can stay active this fall with several free and low-cost offerings at the Canyon Country Community Center. Registration is now open for a variety of programs, including a new circuit training fitness class and the return of a popular swing dance event.

Local adults 40 and older can wear their best dapper duds and dancing shoes for an evening at the Big Band Dance on Tuesday, September 16 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Canyon Country Community Center. Attendees will be able to jump and jive while listening to the music of the big band era. Admission is free with membership to the Canyon Country Community Center.

Registration is also available for the Canyon Country Community Center’s new SMART ProTrainer Circuit class for adults. On Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. through October 30, attendees of all fitness levels will burn calories with strength training, explosive plyometric moves and speed training incorporating the Community Center’s SMART ProTrainer interactive fitness wall. The SMART ProTrainer Circuit is available at $5 per class.

Canyon Country Community Center Offers a Variety of Summer Programs for Everyone

The month of July marks a year and half since the Canyon Country Community Center opened its doors.  In 2013, the Center had a total of 2,907 participants and in June 2014, the total number of participants was 3,987, an overall increase of 27% in participation thus far.

For adults and seniors, popular programming is being offered such as board game nights, bridge and bingo nights, an evening of exercise with dance instructor is also available.

The Summer Blast program for children offers sign language, conversational Japanese,writing and producing a film, and even a “Chopped” food competition.

Around Town: ‘XerPro Family Night Challenge’ at Canyon Country Community Center

On April 11, the Canyon Country Community Center invited families to take part in the first XerPro Family Night Challenge. The Center was divided into four areas; Trivia, XerPro Wall, Lounge, and Photo Booth, to accommodate each individual’s interests and strengths, and provide a rotating schedule so that every family was able to compete in each room.

The focal point of the XerPro Family Challenge was the XerPro Wall focusing on teamwork, communication, and determination based on the points they accumulated during the event. After three rotations of diverse challenges, families awaited to hear their standings.

In the Trivia area, participants’ knowledge of such topics as Santa Clarita, celebrities & athletes, geography, entertainment, basic math, and United States Presidents were tested.

Lastly, each family was able to decorate a picture frame for a family photo taken at the center’s Photo Booth. Every participant earned a medallion, and the top three families earned a trophy to take home.

On Friday, March 28, over 250 residents attended the Friday Night Lights (FNL) event at the Park Sierra Apartment complex in Canyon Country.

Youth and teens participated in activities including face painting, water-balloon toss, and multiple themed games.

Residents participated in bingo activities and enjoyed prizes donated by Toys R US, Canyon Country Car Wash, and Stater Brothers Grocery Store.

Recently, the XerPro Wall at the Canyon Country Community Center underwent many exciting enhancements that will expand its current programming for residents.

Visible changes to the XerPro Wall include new multicolored LED lights and sensors, new plastic covers for the sensors, and a new control box on the left side of the wall. The XerPro “voice” is now more inviting and appealing, and a third speaker now adds additional audio.

New alphabet, number, and color changing games have been added to the XerPro wall, allowing expanded programming for preschoolers/tots and children with special needs.

On Saturday, March 15, the Human Services Office’s Outreach and Neighborhood Services (ONS) Team hosted the Canyon Country Health Fair, in partnership with Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital at the Canyon Country Community Center.

Over 130 residents attended and received wellness checks and information on affordable health care programs and services from local organizations.

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital staff also screened 80 residents for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, body fat analysis, and provided information on nutrition and smoke cessation.

Canyon Country Community Center to Partner with Henry Mayo Hospital to Host Free Health Fair

The Canyon County Community Center is located at 18792 Soledad Canyon Road.

The City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, will host a FREE Health Fair on Saturday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Canyon County Community Center.

The Community Health Fair will offer various free health tests for attendees, including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and body fat analysis, and nutrition education information.  Complimentary healthy snacks, children’s games and raffle prizes will also be provided by local vendors.

On Friday, February 7, the City’s Graffiti Task Force staff conducted a presentation to 40 LEAP participants at the Canyon Country Community Center.

Graffiti Removal staff talked to the kids about what the Graffiti Task Force is doing to keep Santa Clarita clean, the consequences of graffiti, and how taggers are caught. The LEAP program is a structured after-school program for youth 5-12 years old that includes homework time and activities.
