2012 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival Performer Spotlight: The Messick Family and the Wild Horse Singers and Dancers

Santa Clarita City Briefs is spotlighting performers appearing at the 2012 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, presented by Lockheed Federal Credit Union, at the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio. The festival is running from April 19 – 22 in Santa Clarita, California.

With their music, the Messick Family celebrates four generations of Santa Clarita living. As a family, they share more than forty years of making music, raising horses, and grazing cattle in the hills surrounding our valley.

Wild Horse Singers and Dancers were formed to give Urban American Indian Youth in the Los Angeles area an opportunity to learn about traditional values like drumming, singing, and dancing. They teach Northern Traditional songs, dance styles, regalia making, arts and crafts, and ceremonial activities.

They provide opportunities for young people to perform, to participate in pow-wows and to contribute to their community in a meaningful way.

2012 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival Performer Spotlight: Joey Dillon and Pop Haydn

Santa Clarita City Briefs is spotlighting performers appearing at the 2012 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, presented by Lockheed Federal Credit Union, at the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio. The festival is running from April 19 – 22 in Santa Clarita, California.

Joey “Rocketshoes” Dillon is a multiple World Champion Gunslinger, Hollywood Gun Coach to the stars, Actor, and Historian. He has numerous magazine, T.V. and film credits including the History Channel, Discovery Channel, NBC, Spike T.V., weapons instructor for Josh Brolin in “Jonah Hex,” and cover and feature of True West Magazine’s Aug. 2009 issue.

He fills his time between Hollywood shows making a living handling his six guns around the country and around the world! Joey’s gunslinger show combines some of the best gun tricks around with comedy, audience participation, and history.

Pop (Whit) Haydn is an American magician, the winner of six “Magician of the Year” performing awards from the Magic Castle, and is currently Vice-President of the organization. He has opened for Jerry Seinfeld, the Smothers Brothers, Loretta Lynn and others, and performed on cruise ships of many different lines.

Haydn has worked hotels and casinos including Caesars Tahoe, and was one of the first acts chosen in 1996 to open Caesar’s Magical Empire in Las Vegas.

He was the chief magic consultant on Norman Jewison’s Bogus starring Whoopi Goldberg and Gerard Depardieu as well as a consultant on multiple television documentaries including the Discovery Channel’s “Houdini, People Came to See Him Die” and David Copperfield’s television special, “Orient Express.”

2012 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival Performer Spotlight: John Hustead, Jim Townsley and Dave Thornbury

Santa Clarita City Briefs is spotlighting performers appearing at the 2012 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, presented by Lockheed Federal Credit Union, at the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio. The festival is running from April 19 – 22 in Santa Clarita, California.

John Hustead has appeared at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival for the last 13 years as well as entertaining at many Western festivals and parades around the state. With his expertise is riding and roping he has entertained thousands over the years.

Cowboy Trick Roper, Jim Townsley, of Los Angeles entertains audiences with his charoo style of rope handling in colorful cowboy dress. Look for the tall Cowboy on stilts swinging a mean lariat.

Chapmaker Dave Thornbury grew up trick riding and roping on Midwestern fair and rodeo circuits. Dave moved to California in the mid 70’s and since that time has worked at Calabasas Saddlery as well as performing at Calabasas Ranch and other events around the country.
