The L.A. County Fire Department is inviting community members to attend a FREE Water Safety Expo on Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station #126, located at 26320 Citrus Street.

The Santa Clarita Blue Heat, Santa Clarita’s USL W-League soccer team, kicked off their season last week. With seven home games being played at Valencia High School this season, the Blue Heat will bring an exciting brand of semi-pro soccer to Santa Clarita for their third season.

Their next home game is on Sunday, June 10, at 2 p.m. against the Victoria Highlanders. Tickets prices begin at $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Spring and Summertime are the best times to go hiking around the many open space and hiking trails Santa Clarita has to offer. When hiking around Santa Clarita, residents should be ready to encounter any type of wild life they come across.

Here is a brief list on what to do, and what not to do when encountering a rattlesnake.

• Rattlesnakes don’t always rattle before striking defensively.
• Stay on the designated trail, and avoid walking in tall grass, weeds or heavy under-brush.
• Wear hiking boots, or other footwear that covers the ankle.
• Do not step or put your hands where you cannot see clearly around them.
• Hike with a companion that can assist in an emergency.
• If you encounter a rattlesnake on a trail, don’t approach it, it should move away from you when it realizes you are there.
• If you hike with a dog, always keep the dog on a leash, and a safe distance from snakes or other creatures. It is a good idea to have your pet receive the Rattlesnake Vaccination.

The Santa Clarita Public Library is inviting Anime fans to join the Anime Club, which have meetings held at the Canyon Country Library and at the Valencia Library. Teens can watch television shows and movies featuring their favorite Anime titles and characters, discuss Manga with fellow fans, try authentic asian snacks and suggest titles fans would like to see at your local library.

There are two locations and times Anime and Manga fans can meet for the Anime Club:

• Canyon Country Library – 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. every 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month.
• Valencia Library – 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. every 3rd Thursday of each month.

In honor of Memorial Day, Santa Clarita City Hall will be closed Today, May 28. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, May 29.

All branches of the Santa Clarita Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 28,  in observance of Memorial Day.

On Wednesday, May 23, the Los Angeles County Metro and the Ventura County Transportation Commission presented a prestigious Diamond Award at the 14th Annual Rideshare Diamond Award Luncheon to the City of Santa Clarita for their “Outstanding Marketing Programs” including, Employee Rideshare Week and Bike to Work Day. 

Laura Jardine and Brendie Heter from the City’s Environmental Services accepted the Diamond Award at the luncheon.

The Diamond Awards recognizes businesses and public organizations for achievements in developing innovative and successful programs that encourage employees to carpool or bike to work.

The success of Employee Rideshare Week and Bike to Work Day events are attributed to the innovative marketing strategies, such as fliers, social media posts, and press releases, that have helped to get the word out to the community.
