City Invites Community to Meet Award Winning Author at Canyon Country Library May 23

The Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library are inviting community members to meet Catherine Bybee, Award Winning Author, to talk about her latest book “Wife by Wednesday” on Wednesday, May 23, at the Canyon Country Library at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Santa Clarita Public Library Celebrated Early Childhood Literacy Event Over Weekend

The Santa Clarita Public Library celebrated the Newhall Library’s first annual Dia De Los Ninos/Dia De Los Libros event (The Day of the Book / Day of the Child) that was held on Saturday, April 28. Over 200 guests enjoyed fun activities like face painting from local face-painting artist, Portia of ‘Tickled Paint’, arts and crafts, and fun storytime activities. 

Claudia Lopez-Gallagher, bilingual educator and library volunteer, gave two bilingual storytimes which had everyone chanting along in two languages. After storytime, children created a simple book of their own to celebrate books and reading.  

Yvette Brandy, a professional storyteller who draws on her background in speech pathology and education, told stories using music, audience participation, and multiple languages.

Around Town: Friends of the Library Volunteer Recognition

Friends of the Library volunteers were honored last week at the Valencia Library’s community room. City Librarian Ed Kieczykowski met with volunteers over tea. The Friends of the Library have raised over $13,000 since the opening of the Friend’s Bookstore in July 2011.

Meetings are held every first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. to discuss future projects and activities at the Valencia library’s community room. The public is invited to attend meetings.

FREE ‘Prepare UR Pet’ Workshop Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Valencia Library

Tonight, the City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with the American Red Cross, Emergency Kits for All (EK4A) and Cal Humanities, is hosting a free Prepare UR Pet workshop at the Valencia Library from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Pet owners also have the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health Services and Department of Animal Care Control to receive expert advice on health and safety protocols for pets. Participants are advised to leave their pets at home as some emergency demonstrations feature live animals.

FREE Prepare UR Pet Emergency Preparedness Workshop at the Santa Clarita Public Library April 23

The City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with the American Red Cross, Emergency Kits for All (EK4A) and Cal Humanities, is hosting a free Prepare UR Pet workshop to share information with residents about emergency planning for pets at the Valencia Library from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 23.

Participants will learn how to develop family coordination plans, map emergency shelter locations, and create a pet care buddy system. Pet owners also have the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health Services and Department of Animal Care Control to receive expert advice on health and safety protocols for pets.

Participants are advised to leave their pets at home as some emergency demonstrations feature live animals. Workshop participants will receive a free pet travel water bowl while supplies last and have the chance to win free preparedness products and emergency supplies.

Yesterday, Mayor Laurie Ender and Councilmember Marsha McLean visted the construction site at the new Old Town Newhall Library, which is set to open fall 2012.

City Project Manager Harry Corder led a tour around the library construction site.

Once complete, the new Old Town Newhall Library will offer a larger, more modernized facility, reflective of the area’s historic roots.

Santa Clarita Public Library Offers Free College Resources

The Santa Clarita Public Library is offering free workshops at the Valencia Library throughout the month of March to help prepare high school students and their parents for college. Workshops cover a range of information including college preparation, how to apply, and standardized testing.

  • On Saturday, March 10, 2012, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., career coach Jamie Beck will offer strategies for parents and students on succeeding in high school, career exploration, and self-empowerment in a motivational discussion titled, Being Deliberate & Making High School Count.
  • On Monday, March 12, 2012, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., college application specialist Peggy Stabile will host College 101: the Search Begins. The workshop provides an overview of the California State University and University of California school systems, application requirements, as well as the pros and cons of private versus public higher education. Drawing from her experiences as a college counselor, Stabile will help navigate high school students and their parents through the complex university application system.
  • On Monday, March 19, 2012, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Kaplan, the nationwide testing center, will host ACT vs. SAT: What Test Should I Take. This introductory workshop will help students distinguish between the SAT and ACT, and how to best prepare for each type of test.

Yesterday, the Santa Clarita Public Library hosted an exclusive storytelling event with award-winning performer Michael McCarty at the Valencia Library.  Known for his engaging style, McCarty shared African-American stories, International Folktales, and historical and scientific accounts with parents and children, which are drawn from his personal experiences as a world traveler.
