‘Art and Beauty’ Themed First Thursdays Art Walk Returns to Main Street

Come to Old Town Newhall this Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Main Street, to celebrate the First Thursdays Art Walk, which will celebrate Art and Beauty, with free art demonstrations, a fashion show, photo-shoots, a gourmet food truck, and live music.

Catch a live photo shoot with pin-up girl models in vintage bathing suits posing with beach props.

Watch as local artists create stunning painting of a live model. Throughout the evening, two artists will work together to create an original piece of artwork at Pulchella Winery.

The Alternative Side will perform at the Art Walk.

The Alternate Side Band, a Los Angeles based group, will be playing Jazz harmonies, Funk and R&B grooves at this Thursday’s event.

Also, featured at the event will be DJ Justin Cornwall.

beachwear fashion show, presented by FRESH, will showcase the designer clothing store’s latest summer swimsuit fashion trends down Main Street. The food truck will be  The Surfer Taco.

Santa Clarita Public Library Celebrated Early Childhood Literacy Event Over Weekend

The Santa Clarita Public Library celebrated the Newhall Library’s first annual Dia De Los Ninos/Dia De Los Libros event (The Day of the Book / Day of the Child) that was held on Saturday, April 28. Over 200 guests enjoyed fun activities like face painting from local face-painting artist, Portia of ‘Tickled Paint’, arts and crafts, and fun storytime activities. 

Claudia Lopez-Gallagher, bilingual educator and library volunteer, gave two bilingual storytimes which had everyone chanting along in two languages. After storytime, children created a simple book of their own to celebrate books and reading.  

Yvette Brandy, a professional storyteller who draws on her background in speech pathology and education, told stories using music, audience participation, and multiple languages.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station

Tomorrow, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in partnership with the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department, has scheduled a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which will take place at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This is a great opportunity for those who have unwanted and unused prescription drugs to safely dispose of those medications at the Sheriff’s Station at 23740 W. Magic Mountain Parkway.

Americans that participated in the DEA’s third National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 29, 2011, turned in more than 377,086 pounds (188.5 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at the 5,327 take-back sites that were available in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

2012 Santa Clarita Dodgers Day Tickets on Sale Now, Deadline May 10

This Week in Santa Clarita previews the 35th Annual Santa Clarita Dodger Day held on May 19 against the defending World Series Champions St. Louis Cardinals. The last day to purchase tickets is May 10, at 12 noon. Tickets can be purchased at the  Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.

Tickets Available for July 22 City Excursion to the Festival of Arts ‘Pageant of the Masters’

The City of Santa Clarita is offering transportation and tickets, for purchase, to the Festival of Arts presentation of the Pageant of the Masters. This years presentation will feature The Genius, a ninety minutes program of “living pictures” – incredibly faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original paintings.

The presentation is set in an outdoor amphitheater with a professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant as the best presentation of its kind.

Acclaimed for its awe-inspiring theatrical celebration of tableaux vivants – “Living Pictures” – the 2012 Pageant will once again showcase classic works by some of the extraordinary masters who galvanized art history.

From the glory of the Italian Renaissance to the deeply personal imaginings of modern masters, The Genius will fill the Irvine Bowl with breathtaking theatrical recreations of memorable artworks.

FREE ‘Prepare UR Pet’ Workshop Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Valencia Library

Tonight, the City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with the American Red Cross, Emergency Kits for All (EK4A) and Cal Humanities, is hosting a free Prepare UR Pet workshop at the Valencia Library from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Pet owners also have the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health Services and Department of Animal Care Control to receive expert advice on health and safety protocols for pets. Participants are advised to leave their pets at home as some emergency demonstrations feature live animals.
