This Week in Santa Clarita previews the Rivendale Open Space area acquired by the City of Santa Clarita west of the 5 freeway.

Santa Clarita residents and community groups are invited to share their ideas and suggestions for the 60-acre Rivendale open space area happening this Saturday, March 2, at 10 a.m. in the multi-purpose room at Wiley Canyon Elementary School, located at 24240 W. La Glorita Circle.

Interested in Biomed or Aerospace Jobs? Santa Clarita WorkSource Presents Fast Track Program March 8

Job seekers interested in the fields of aerospace and biomedical manufacturing are invited to attend a free orientation about a new training program at the Santa Clarita WorkSource Center on Friday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The orientation will be held at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center, Room 107.  All job seekers are encouraged to arrive on or before 9 a.m.

Sponsored by the Fast Track Institute, the orientation will review a new 250-hour employment preparation program. The Fast Track Institute focuses on job training for entry-level positions in manufacturing and assembly.  Job seekers are encouraged to dress to impress, have multiple copies of their resume, and be prepared to complete an employment application for a potential interview.  Interested applicants must register for the free online orientation.

Classes are hosted Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., beginning March 12, through April 20.  There is no cost for eligible candidates. Upon completion of the program, candidates will participate in a specialized job fair featuring employers from aerospace and biomedical companies.

Thursdays @ Newhall Returns to Main Street in Old Town Newhall with New ‘Art Slam’ Event March 7

The streets of Old Town Newhall will once again transform into a thriving arts and entertainment district at night with the return of Thursdays @ Newhall, kicking off with free events hosted from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday, March 7.

Farmers Market Produce

The weekly Farmers Market returns March 7, and is the perfect place to grab fresh, seasonal fruits, produce, and specialty food items.  The popular, street-fair style event takes place every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Main Street.  Coastal Pacific, which is known as one of Southern California’s best market operators, manages the weekly event and brings a variety of new and returning vendors to Santa Clarita each week.

Thursdays@Newhall is launching a new free event in Old Town Newhall on the first Thursday of the month, called Art Slam.  Art Slam will guide artists responding to a theme by developing interactive opportunities, displaying large installations of art work, and featuring several thematic art galleries in local businesses and outdoors on Main Street.

On Thursday, March 7, the first event will be themed LIGHT Slam, located on the corner of Lyons and Main Street, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.  Attendees will be able to experience interactive art displays, exhibits and installations all focused around light at various businesses in Old Town Newhall.

SENSES returns to Main Street on the third Thursday of each month with a Carnivale themed block party hosted from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on March 21.  The evening will include live music from Vaud & the Villains, gourmet food trucks, street performers, and themed activities.

On Wednesday, February 20, the Drug Free Youth In Town (DFYIT) Program held a Leadership Summit program for over 70 DFYIT Club officers from 13 local schools at the Santa Clarita Activities Center.

Students participated in teambuilding, learned marketing strategies for their campuses and developed facilitation skills, in addition to networking with fellow DFYIT Leaders.

Santa Clarita Worksource and the Small Business Development Center Present Quickbooks Institute Certification Program

Job seekers looking for QuickBooks skills are invited to attend a free orientation about a new certificate program at the Santa Clarita WorkSource Center on Friday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The orientation will be held at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center, Room 301.  All job seekers are encouraged to arrive before 9 a.m.

Sponsored by the Small Business Development Center, the orientation will review intensive computer training including keyboard skills and basic accounting fundamentals.  This orientation focuses on job training for individuals who want to develop or update their QuickBooks skills.  Job seekers are encouraged to dress to impress, have multiple copies of their resume, and be prepared to complete an employment application for a potential interview.  Interested individuals must register for the free orientation online.

Classes are hosted twice a week for three hours in the evening for a total of 24 hours beginning early in March 2013.  There is no cost to attend for eligible candidates. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

On February 23, seven Junior High schools throughout Santa Clarita came together to compete in the first Drug Free Youth in Down (DFYIT) “Dodge Drugs” Dodgeball Tournament at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex.

This event was to help provide junior high school students and their parents with a fun and interactive evening, with over 200 parents, students and friends in attendance.

Local Artists Encouraged to Get Creative with Recycle Carts for cArt aRt Competition

Residents and local artists are invited to participate in the City of Santa Clarita’s cArt aRt Competition, in conjuction with this years Earth Arbor Day Festival, hosted on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central Park. Now through Monday, March 18, residents can register to pick up a free cart, decorate it and be entered into a contest for prizes.

Community members are encouraged to transform recycling carts into vibrant pieces of art using paint, art supplies, recycled items, and creativity to increase awareness of reusing and recycling household items.  School groups, clubs, teams, church groups and other organizations are encouraged to participate.

All submissions will be on display at Earth Arbor Day on Saturday, April 13.  Winners will receive cash prizes in the following categories:

  1. Grand Prize $200
  2. Most Creative $100
  3. Best Local Flare $100
  4. Best Green Theme $100
  5. Fan Favorite $50.

Artists must provide everything used in the art project, with the exception of the recycling cart, which can be painted or left natural.  Containers that once held hazardous waste products cannot be used in the competition, including used containers of paint, oil, pesticides, cleaning products and chemicals.

All entries must be submitted between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the Environmental Services booth at the City’s Earth Arbor Day event hosted at Central Park on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Interactive ‘Enviroscape’ and Open Space Workshop at the Santa Clarita Public Library: VIDEO

The City of Santa Clarita kicked off the first workshop in a three-part hands-on series to help educate students in kindergarten through 12th grade on how to prevent pollution and protect the environment at the Old Town Newhall Library.

Each of the workshops are open to the public and will include a 3-D landscape display with a contained mini watershed, known as an Enviroscape model, which demonstrates how pollution is created and how it can be prevented. This interactive model allows students to view different actions to better understand the sources of water pollution while emphasizing pollution prevention by showing best management practices with a follow up demonstration.

Proposed County Property Owner Fee to be Heard by L.A. County Board of Supervisors March 12: VIDEO

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is holding a second public hearing on the proposed Clean Water, Clean Beaches measure on Tuesday, March 12, at the Hall of Administration in Los Angeles. The Santa Clarita City Council has already unanimously voted to protest the fee on all parcels owned by the City of Santa Clarita.

If the Board of Supervisors does not receive protest from a majority of parcel owners by the close of the public hearing, they may determine to move the measure to a formal election. Community members are encouraged attend and may address the board on whether the measure should move forward to an election.

*Parcel owners now have the opportunity to protest via email.*

Here’s how to file a protest form via email by March 12:

  1. Look up the 10-digit Assessor’s Identification Number for your property, also referred to as Assessor’s Parcel Number, or APN. Click here to go to the search form on the  Assessor’s website.  Enter the property address in the “Search by Street Address” field, and the AIN/APN will come up.  You can also find your AIN/APN on your deed, property tax bill, or title report, or you can call the Assessor’s Office at 888-807-2111.
  1. Complete a protest form (download the form here) OR write a protest letter (it doesn’t have to be on the official form).  You MUST include ALL of the following FOR EACH PARCEL:
  • Assessor’s Parcel Number (APN)
  • Parcel site address (or description of parcel’s location if parcel has no address)
  • Name and signature of the parcel owner or an authorized representative.  (NOTE: You MUST include a hand-written signature, not just a typed name.)
  1. Scan or take a picture of your protest form or letter and email it to wqfi.info@dpw.lacounty.gov.  You may also mail the form or letter to the Executive Officer of the Board of Supervisors, P.O. Box 866006 Los Angeles, CA 90086, or you can hand-deliver protests into the ballot box located on the 3rd floor of the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, 500 West Temple Street, Room 383.
  1. If you own multiple parcels, please be sure to submit a protest for each parcel.
