Santa Clarita Public Library Hosts Book Club Extravaganza

This Week in Santa Clarita previews the Santa Clarita Public Library Book Club Extravaganza, hosted at the Santa Clarita Activities Center on Sunday, November 20, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.  This event is to help promote socializing and finding friends to come together to form book clubs.

City Announces Road Closures for 2011 Santa Clarita Marathon

On Sunday, November 6, thousands of runners will come from near and far to compete in the City of Santa Clarita’s Marathon sponsored by Parkway Motorcars. Much of the event will take place on the City’s off-street trail system, but several road closures will be in effect.

The Santa Clarita Marathon is an official qualifier for the Boston Marathon and will feature a marathon, half marathon, 5k, Kid K and Mayor’s Walk.  For specific times and other information check out SCMarathon.org.

Free Flu Vaccinations Available at College of the Canyons

The City of Santa Clarita, College of the Canyons, the L.A. County Department of Public Health and the L.A. County Sheriffs Department will host a free flu immunization clinic on Friday, November 4. Vaccines will be dispensed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or as long as the vaccine lasts.

The walk-in flu clinic will be conducted in the East Physical Education building on the College of the Canyons Valencia campus, located off Rockwell Canyon Road. Parking will be in adjacent lots.

Inoculations against the seasonal flu at the POD are provided free of charge and will be dispensed at this event in anticipation of an active flu season.

Public Invited to Comment on Updating Zoning Development Requirements

Residents, property owners and businesses are invited to attend a public meeting to share feedback in updating the Unified Development Code (UDC) on Thursday, October 27, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Century Room at City Hall.

Since the City Council adopted the new General Plan in June 2011, the Unified Development Code (UDC) needs to be revised to reflect new development standards as required by California state law.

Santa Clarita WorkSouce Center Hosts Retail Recruitment at Activities Center

The Santa Clarita WorkSource Center is hosting a free retail recruitment in partnership with Goodwill Southern California on Tuesday, October 25, from 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Activities Center.  All job seekers are encouraged to arrive on or before 10 a.m. 

Goodwill is interviewing for a variety of positions, from entry level to management.  Qualified candidates have retail experience or an interest in sales and the ability to work a flexible schedule.   Jobseekers are encouraged to dress to impress, have multiple copies of their resume available, and be prepared for on-site interviews.

Around Town: Parking Expansion Groundbreaking Ceremony at Newhall Metrolink Station

Today the Mayor and Santa Clarita City Council held the Newhall Metrolink Parking Expansion Groundbreaking Ceremony in Old Town Newhall.

 
Mayor Marsha McLean along with Councilmembers Laurene Weste and Bob Kellar attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
 
 
The Newhall Metrolink Parking Project will increase the number of available shared parking between Metrolink riders and Community Center visitors by an additional 95 spaces.
 
 
The project will also construct a new half-acre recreation area directly behind the Newhall Community Center with benches, picnic tables, trees, walkways and irrigated planting areas.

Teen Group Hosts Haunted Mansion at Newhall Community Center

Residents, ages 8 and up, are invited to the First Annual Haunted Mansion hosted by the City of Santa Clarita Community Center Teen Group from 7:30 p.m. to 10: 30 p.m. on Friday, October 28, at the Newhall Community Center.  Admission for the Haunted Mansion is $3.00, which will be used to sponsor future programs for the Community Center Teen Group.

City Begins Weekly Street Sweeping for Fall/Winter Season

Beginning on Monday, October 24, the City will increase the frequency of street sweeping throughout all areas of the City just in time for the fall/winter seasons.  Street sweeping will take place every week between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Street sweeping will return to the monthly schedule on Monday, January 16, 2012.

Residents are asked to do their part by removing vehicles from the street during scheduled street sweeping days, keeping the street clear of lawn and tree trimmings, trash, and debris, and removing portable basketball courts from the streets.

Old Town Newhall Construction Update October 2011

An important phase of construction on the Old Town Newhall Library was completed this week with the installation of wood trusses that form the second floor roof on the east side of the library.

Weighing approximately 18,000 pounds each, the wood trusses not only support the roof on the east side of the library, but they are also an important architectural feature of the second floor.
