Final Matchups Set for 2010 USL W-League Championship this Saturday

The 2010 United Soccer Leagues Women’s League Championship game will feature the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Buffalo Flash. The teams will face off Saturday, July 31, at 7 p.m. pst at the Jack Welch Stadium in Santa Clarita. Thursday the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues by a score of 3-1 and the Buffalo Flash bested the Atlanta Silverbacks 3 – 1.

Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased on site at Canyon High School for $10.00 a piece.  The consolation game featuring the Silverbacks and Quickstrike Lady Blues will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the finale to follow at 7 p.m. Food and beverages, including frozen drinks from Juice it Up! are available for purchase on-site. United Soccer Leagues Women’s League Championship Begins Today!

The 2010 USL W-League Championship will begin today at the Harry Welch Stadium in Canyon Country. The first of two semi-final games begins at 5 p.m. and will feature the Buffalo Flash vs Atlanta Silverbacks.

The second semi-final game is set for 8 p.m. with the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues taking on the Vancouver Whitecaps.  Single day passes are available at the gate and are $10 each. Championship passes are $15 and allow access to all games today and for the final two games Saturday July 31. Details and directions can be found on the website.

Santa Clarita All-Stars to Rock Central Park Saturday

The City of Santa Clarita’s Concerts in the Park series keeps on rolling along with the Santa Clarita All-Stars featured at Central Park this Saturday. The SCV All-Stars is made up of Santa Clarita Valley’s busiest professional musicians. These talented SCV musicians have been seen on stage worldwide, in movies and television, on tour with major artists, and heard in countless recordings and commercials. Their show crosses over into many genres consisting of music by Earth, Wind & Fire, Whitney Houston, Andrea Bocelli, Shania Twain, and much more.

The City’s Concerts series runs each Saturday at 7 p.m. through the end of August at Cenrtral Park. All concerts are free and open to the public.

This year Whole Foods is making attending the Concerts in the Park much easier by providing low cost healthy meals and drinks. If you’re looking to lighten the load,  leave the cooler at home and stop by their booth to the left of the stage for the best deal in town…an all-natural dinner plate for just $5.   You can also purchase great snacks, including cotton candy, for the entire family. Ice cold waters are available for only $1.

City Launches Online Business Events Calendar

The City of Santa Clarita has launched an online calendar to provide Santa Clarita business owners with up to date information on trainings, seminars, networking opportunities and special events available. The calendar is available on the City’s website.

The Business Calendar includes events occurring in Santa Clarita that are hosted by the City of Santa Clarita, as well as partners including the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber, Valley Industry Association, the Small Business Development Center, the College of the Canyons, and the City of Santa Clarita WorkSource Center.

Santa Clarita WorkSource Center to Hold Mass Job Recruitment Thursday

The Santa Clarita Worksource Center will host a mass recruitment event on Thursday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Job seekers  should bring copies of their resumes and dress professionally. Interviews will be conducted on-site.

Around Town: Chick-fil-A Campers Count Down to Opening

This was the scene at Chick-fil-A this morning. Customers will wait 24 hours for the one year of free sandwiches.

 The much anticipated Chick-fil-A restaurant will open at the Westfield Valencia Town Center tomorrow, July 29. Fans of the restaurant are already camping out to be one of the “First 100.“ 

When Chick-fil-A opens a new store the first 100 qualifiying customers who line up 24 hours prior to the stores opening recieve free Chick-fil-A for one year.

Registration Open for Downed Officer Support Ride

The 15th Annual Downed Officer Support Ride will be held Sunday,  August 22, and will benefit families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who have lost loved ones in the line of duty. Riders can enter motorcycles or cars for the escorted ride through  Santa Clarita.

On-site registration at the Westfield Valencia Town Center will be held from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. The cost is $25 per person or $35 per couple. The entry fee will include lunch and t-shirt. The ride will end at the Mann Bio Medical Park in the industrial center.

Registration can be done by printing out the entry form from the flyer and mailing in a check or by   online credit card registration here.

Teens Find Summer Jobs Through YES Program

This summer over 25 local businesses partnered with the City to mentor and train 55 Santa Clarita Valley teens in the summer program.

Program participants Brooke and Kevin found jobs at the Boys and Girls Club.

Since 1991, the City of Santa Clarita’s Youth Employment Services (YES), program has helped special-needs, low-income and at-risk youth, ages 14-18 years old, obtain job skills training and employment.

Teens got to test their skills at public speaking as part of the program.

The program seeks to help participants become acclimated to the workforce and secure job offers or good references for future employment. 

Program participant Jose signed on with Famous Footwear.

Companies currently participating in the YES program include; CVS Pharmacy, Old Navy, Famous Footwear, Tee Plus, TJ Maxx and Saugus Pet Supply. Specialty stores include; AV Party Rental and Santa Clarita Valley Rentals. Non profit organizations include the local Boys and Girls Club chapters, Help the Children,  SCV Adult Day Care, SCV Senior Center, Heads-Up Horse Therapy, Northeast Valley Health Corporation, L.A. County Parks,  the City’s Recreation and Community Service division. Additional partners include; Rio Norte Junior High, Placerita Junior High and Sierra Vista Junior High School.
