Full Weekend Of Things To Do In Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita residents have had a lot of options for things to do while staying in town the last couple of weeks with the Earth/Arbor Day Festival and Cowboy Festival. This weekend the trend continues with Tributefest, the Pet Expo and the Community Collection event at C.O.C.

DrinkEatPlay, hosts of popular Los Angeles events such as the Los Angeles Barbeque Festival and Cupcake Challenge, is putting on Tributefest this Saturday at the City of Santa Clartia’s Central Park. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are still on sale.

The SCV Pet and Family Expo will be held at the College of the Canyons Saturday and Sunday. For tickets and more information log onto their website here.

City Councilmembers Sworn In, Begin Term

At Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Santa Clarita City Council, Councilmember Frank Ferry, Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean and Mayor Laurene Weste were all sworn in to begin their new four year terms as City Councilmembers. With the final results tabulated, each of the incumbant candidates were re-elected to public office.

Pictured above is Mayor Laurene Weste being sworn in along side of her husband Jim. Mayor Weste was first elected in 1998 and has served on the City Council ever since. Prior to becoming a City Councilmember Laurene served on the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission. She is currently serving her third term as Mayor of the City of Santa Clarita.

Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean is seen being sworn into office accompanied by her husband Dale and members of her family. Mayor Pro Tem McLean was first elected in 2002 and served as Mayor in 2007.

Councilmember Frank Ferry is joined by members of his family and the City Council as he swears in begining his fourth term on the City Council. Councilmember Ferry has served two terms as Mayor.

The next City Council election will occur in 2012, when Councilmembers Laurie Ender and Bob Kellar’s terms would expire. Pictured above is the Santa Clarita City Council for 2010-2012.

City Hosts ‘Pool School’ Regional Workshop

City staff hosted representatives from several cities for a workshop Tuesday

Tuesday, April 27, pool technicians Pete Mcjunkin and Mark Jordan taught a 2010 Southern California Public Pool Operators Association Workshop at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.   The workshop was titled ‘Pool School’ and covered pool equipment operations, chemical safety, and budget saving ideas.  Lifeguards from several other cities, including Santa Monica, Ventura, La Mirada, Glendale, Burbank, Palmdale, L.A. City and South Gate traveled to Santa Clarita for the workshop.

Tuesday marked the first time the City hosted the annual Southern California Public Pool Operators Association workshop

Since 1990, the City of Santa Clarita has been a member agency of the Southern California Public Pool Operators Association (SCPPOA).  There are more than 70 municipal agencies and cities around Southern California that are also members.  Founded in 1953, SCPPOA’s goal is to advance the field of aquatic recreation through forums, educational opportunities, and resources.  One of the ways this is accomplished, is SCPPOA’s annual educational workshops and last Tuesday marked the first time the City of Santa Clarita has hosted the event.

Mayor Weste Delivers Small Business Development Grant Check

Earlier today Mayor Laurene Weste dropped by Richan Landscape and Maintenance to hand deliver business owner Doug Richan a check for his small business grant. 

Richan Landscape and Maintenance was one of twenty businesses in the Newhall Redevelopment Area who were awarded a $5,000 small businesses grant by the City Council earlier this year. The successful applicants are moving forward with the business development projects outlined in their approved grant applications.

Created as part of the City’s 21 Point Plan for Progress, the Newhall Redevelopment Small Business Grant Program awards individual grants of up to $5,000 to 20 small businesses in the Newhall Redevelopment area. The grants are awarded following a competitive process.

California Cash For Appliances Program Underway

The California Appliance Rebate Program is officially underway! The program, which launched on Earth Day, April 22, 2010, offers rebates to assist California residents in swapping out old energy inefficient home appliances for new, Energy Star qualified items.

Three residential appliance categories are eligible to receive rebates as part of the program: clothes washers ($100 rebate), refrigerators ($200 rebate), and room/window air conditioners ($50 rebate). Appliances must be ENERGY STAR-listed and certified to the Energy Commission as meeting all state and federal appliance efficiency standards to be eligible for rebates.

Hero of the Week

April 29, 2010

The City’s Anti-Gang Task Force hosted a Hero of the Week Recognition Ceremony to honor 17 local junior high and high school students for showing leadership and overcoming obstacles in their lives Monday night. Students were selected by teachers and principals throughout the year and received commendations from the dignitaries.

 Created in 1991, the City’s Anti-Gang Task Force works toward ending gang violence and crime in Santa Clarita through partnerships, proactive programming, and networking.

2010 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival Recap

This Week In Santa Clarita covers the Tennis Jubilee

  The City of Santa Clarita will host its Annual Tennis Jubilee on Saturday, May 8 at Valencia Heritage Park. The fun and free community event will feature activities for all levels of tennis experience, culminating with an exhibition match.

The  Tennis Jubliee  will feature tennis skill drills, crafts and games, including racquet demonstrations and a Hit for Prizes challenge. Tennis enthusiasts of all ages can take a swing in the Family Fun Zone and stick around following the event to sit courtside for an exciting exhibition match from local tennis players.

Tennis Jubilee is free to attend and open to the public. Valencia Heritage Park is located at 24155 Newhall Ranch Road.
