The City of Santa Clarita’s Cross Valley Connector To Open Saturday

March 25, 2010

The final piece of roadway, that connects the cross town commute is the bridge over the river connecting Newhall Ranch Road with Golden Valley Road

The final link of roadway, connecting  I-5 and Highway 126 accross Santa  Clarita to the 14 Freeway, will be open this Saturday, March 27. Grand Opening ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. on the Newhall Ranch Road side of the bridge. *

The Cross Valley Connector is a network of roadways which has taken over 10 years and $245 million to assemble. There will still  be work left to do, namely a road widening near the 14 Freeway, landscaping and other improvements, but Saturday will mark the first time community members will be able to travel continuously from one side of Santa Clarita to another using only the Cross Valley Connector.

Around Town: Towsley Canyon in Santa Clarita

March 24, 2010

The pictures in this post were taken Tuesday morning at Towsley Canyon.

After a good dose of seasonal rain, Ed Davis Park in Towsley Canyon is green with vegetation.

There are different trail options at Towsley Canyon. The 5 mile loop is popular with hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers. The pictures in this post were taken while traveling along the lower entrance to the 5 mile loop. The trail ascends steadily and gradually for the most part, but there are portions that can be strenuous to novice hikers.

When  in season, the California Poppy can be found blooming along the trail.

Wild flowers are blooming in abundance right now at Towsley Canyon. The flowers are beautiful this time of year, but can wreak havac for those with sensative allergy problems.

One of the payoffs of taking the 5 mile loop is the incredible view of the Santa Clarita Valley. There are vantage points along the trail where you can see clear to the Castaic Dam and the 14 Freeway –  from the same spot.

Here water is flowing through a natural rock formation in the Canyon known as the Narrows.

Towsley Canyon is located along the Old Road near the Calgrove exit of I-5. For directions, trail maps and more information click on LAMountains.com here.

Hit the Trail 2010

March 23, 2010

This picture shows riders leaving from the Valencia High School trail start.

The City of Santa Clarita’s  Hit the Trail community bike ride took place last Saturday against a backdrop of warm weather and clear skies. Guided bike rides started from three locations around Santa Clarita. The riders above were among a group of about 50 who started at Valencia High School.

Mayor Laurene Weste and Jon Dell, with event partner radio station KHTS AM 1220, welcomed riders as they arrived. KHTS emceed all of the events of the day. Hit the Trail was a part of the Healthy Santa Clarita initiative which is meant to provide resources and events focusing on healthy living.

Tricycle races for all ages were a popular activity at Bridgeport Park. Juice It Up! donated free juice samples to the riders, Castaic Lake Water Agency was on hand with water and lunch was provided by Jersey Mikes.

The Santa Clarita Velo is an active supporter of cycling in Santa Clarita and has participated in the Hit the Trail event each of the last three years. This year they had a booth and served as guides at the ride starting points.

The Santa Clarita Velo also produces their own event,  the Santa Clarita Century, which includes a 100 mile bike and other smaller rides, all happening on Saturday April 3.

At times competition was  fierce at the tricycle races.
