First Sheriff’s Business Alliance Workshop of the New Year Scheduled for January 26

The City of Santa Clarita Sheriff's Business Alliance Workshops are back in 2010

The Real Estate Crime Prevention Lunch & Learn will be held at the Santa Clarita City Hall  Council Chambers, Tuesday, January 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This free lunch and learn seminar will identify:

• Key areas for potential fraud between commercial and residential transactions 

• A variety of common real estate fraud schemes for you to be aware of

• Approaches you can take to prevent/detect fraud at the outset

• Ways in which to maximize recovery of loan funds

Real Estate Brokers, Mortgage Brokers, Title & Escrow Professionals are all encouraged to attend. There is no cost for the workshop and lunch is free for attendees.

City Installs New Directional Signs

The City of Santa Clarita began installing eight directional signs on four local roadways yesterday to assist the public in locating two of the most frequented commercial destinations in Santa Clarita. The signs are part of the City’s 21-Point Business Plan for Progress, which aims to boost the local economy and support business.

The signs are placed in medians along McBean Parkway, Valencia Boulevard, Magic Mountain Parkway, and near Bouquet Junction. The signage is designed to increase visibility for Westfield Valencia Town Center and the Valencia Auto Center- Santa Clarita’s two largest sales tax generators.

City Council Returns To Session Tonight

The Santa Clarita City Council is back in session this evening for their regularly scheduled meeting,  returning from their Winter break. The meeting will start at 6 p.m., with Mayor Laurene Weste presiding, and will be shown live on SCVTV and on the City’s website here.

Both the Santa Clarita City Council Meetings and Planning Commission Meetings are televised live on SCVTV which can be seen 0n Time Warner, Channel 20, and AT&T Uverse, Channel 99 (select Santa Clarita). The meetings are also shown on SCVTV.com and the City’s website. The City’s news and information television show, This Week In Santa Clarita, can been seen at 5:30 p.m. on SCVTV.

City Opens Sand Volleyball Court At Santa Clarita Sports Complex

Mayor Laurene Weste and the Santa Clarita City Council were on hand for the opening of the City’s first ever all-sand volleyball court. The new court was added as part of the Sports Complex’s Phase IV Expansion. 

Other Phase IV Expansion amenities included basketball courts, walking paths and the opening of the City’s second dog park “Canine Country.”

SCV Film Festival Runs Tonight Through Sunday At Repertory East Playhouse

The SCV Film Festival officially kicks off tonight

The SCV Film Festival officially kicks off this evening and will run through Sunday. The full schedule is here, and includes a wide variety of films from both local and non-local filmakers alike.

A preview of the SCV Festival was held Thursday to a packed house. Doug Jones, far right, was in attendance before the screening of his film, "My Name is Jerry"

 One of the anticipated screenings of the SCV Film Festival will be the independent romantic comedy “My Name is Jerry” starring Doug Jones, who has acted in the recent hits “Hell Boy II” and the “Fantastic Four.” Jones will be on hand Saturday for a question and answer session after the screening of his film.

Daily passes for the festival are $8 for adults and $5 for students/seniors.

Santa Clarita Enterprise Zone Expands

The City of Santa Clarita is pleased to announce that the California Department of Housing and Community Development approved the City Council’s request to expand the Santa Clarita Enterprise Zone. The expansion is part of the City’s 21-Point Business Plan for Progress, adopted by the City Council in April 2009.

The approval is good news for businesses in the local Bridgeport Marketplace, Baywood at Bridgeport, and Granary Square, which can now take advantage of major tax savings offered through the Enterprise Zone program.

More than 150 City-based businesses have taken advantage of the City’s Enterprise Zone program since designation in 2007, representing more than $41 million in potential tax savings to businesses in Santa Clarita.

Santa Clarita WorkSource Center Moving To C.O.C. University Center

The College of the Canyons University Center will be the new home to the Santa Clarita WorkSource Center

The City of Santa Clarita and College of the Canyons are partnering, yet again, as the City-run Santa Clarita WorkSource Center will move into the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center at the C.O.C. Campus.

The WorkSource Center will remain open at it’s current location, on Soledad Canyon Road, through the transition, which is expected to happen in February 2010.

Santa Clarita Local Census Office Opens

Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste joined Census Office Manager Dave Simon on stage during the local Census office open house

The Santa Clarita Local Census Office opened it’s doors today amidst celebration and presentations by dignitaries. Mayor Laurene Weste  was joined by Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean and City Council Member Bob Kellar  during the ceremony that preceded the open house.

The United States Census 2010 is kicking into gear as the entire nation will undergo a head count later this year. Census information is critical to forming  Congressional Districts and helps determine the amount of federal funding that is allocated accross the United States.

One of the immediate focuses is staffing. The local office will employ nearly 1,800 workers for temporary jobs relating to the Census.
