Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon Introduces Soledad Canyon High Desert, California Public Lands Conservation and Management Act of 2009

December 21, 2009

Soledad Canyon

The City of Santa Clarita has welcomed the news that Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon has introduced mining legislation into Congress regarding an area in Soledad Canyon. In a letter signed by Mayor Laurene Weste and Councilmember Bob Kellar the City said the following:

We are very pleased to inform you that on December 16th, 2009 Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon introduced H.R. 4332 the Soledad Canyon High Desert, California Public Lands Conservation and Management Act of 2009 into the 111th Congress.

H.R. 4332 is a slightly modified version of the 2008 Soledad Canyon Mine Act and seeks to accomplish the same goal as its predecessor‐ solve the long‐standing mining dispute between the City of Santa Clarita and the international mining company CEMEX USA. H.R. 4332 was carefully crafted in concert with members of the environmental and business communities, as well as local residents and stakeholders, to end the possibility of mining at these sites in Soledad Canyon, fairly compensate CEMEX for the cancellation of its mining contracts and potentially provide for the acquisition of environmentally sensitive lands in Southern California. We are very excited about this bill and the benefits it could provide our City, as well as the rest of Southern California.

The full letter plus information on H.R. 4332 can be found on the City’s website here.
