At the special City Council re-organization meeting of December 8, 2009 Laurene Weste was appointed Mayor by a unanimous vote of the City Council. City Councilmember Marsha McLean was select as Mayor Pro Tem.
2010 will mark the third term for Weste as Mayor since she joined the Santa Clarita City Council in 1998, following a tenure on the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission. Among the goals Mayor Weste listed for 2010 were: to start construction on the 26,000 square foot library in Old Town Newhall, open the final segment of the Cross Valley Connector, re-launch the Healthy Santa Clarita program and continue the City’s 21-Point Business Plan for Progress, which works towards retaining jobs, increasing local filming and tourism and supports local business.

During the meeting outgoing Mayor Frank Ferry thanked the City Council, City Staff and community members for their hard work and dedication to making Santa Clarita a better place to live.
During his year as Mayor, Ferry had an outreach program to local youth called “Mayor Dude.” The Mayor Dude outreach program was designed to involve Santa Clarita youth in local government and utilized chat sessions, Facebook and Twitter and school assemblies to interact with Santa Clarita kids and teens. Notable accomplishments that took place during Ferry’s term as Mayor included: the opening of the new Santa Clarita Skate Park, the timely passage of a balanced budget, the completion of the I-5 Magic Mountain Parkway corridor, the completion of the first phase of the Old Town Newhall Streetscape project and the completion of Phase 4 of the City’s Sports Complex.

The December 8 meeting also marked the last meeting for long time City Clerk Sharon Dawson who is retiring from a 37 year career in municipal government.
