Big 5 Opens Second Store In Santa Clarita

Big 5 now open in Canyon Country

Big 5 Sporting Goods opened their second store in Santa Clarita Sunday, November 22nd ahead of schedule.  They had originally planned to open their doors on Black Friday however, the store was stocked and ready for customers a whole “Big 5 days” early.  The new store is located at the corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Whites Canyon in Canyon Country.

Fallen Deputy Randy Hamson Honored

The City of Santa Clarita, Santa Clarita Deputies, and Pardee Homes honored fallen Deputy Randy J. Hamson and his family with a street dedication on Tuesday November 24. SCV Sheriff has the full story here.

Mayor Frank Ferry was among the list of dignitaries to honor Deputy Hamson’s memory and service to the community.

Family members of Deputy Hamson helped raise the street sign that bears his name.

Dignitaries on hand included Sheriff Lee Baca, Captain Jacques La Berge, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; Mayor Frank Ferry, City Manager Ken Pulskamp, City of Santa Clarita; President and Chief Executive Officer Mike McGee, Pardee Homes; and Rosalind Wayman, Senior Deputy for Supervisor Michael Antonovich who joined family members, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Hamson to forever memorialize the community hero.

Metrolink Holiday Toy Express Heading To Santa Clarita

The Metrolink Holiday Toy Express rolls into the Newhall Metrolink station December 4

The City of Santa Clarita is inviting community members to greet the Metrolink Holiday Toy Express as it makes two stops in Santa Clarita to give holiday performances and collect donations for the “Spark of Love” toy drive. The festively decorated train will stop at the Newhall Metrolink station Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. and the Via Princessa Metrolink station on Sunday, December 20 at 8:15 p.m.  

Residents are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy for the Southland Firefighters’ “Spark of Love” toy drive

The Holiday Toy Express will present two back-to-back holiday shows at the Newhall Metrolink station, one for each side of the train, to accommodate attendees. The Old Town Newhall Association will also be on hand at the Newhall stop to treat guests to complimentary hot chocolate and cookies.

Residents are invited to come out to the Newhall and Via Princessa Metrolink stations to greet the Holiday Toy Express and bring a new, unwrapped toy to be collected by Santa, Mrs. Claus and their friends aboard the train. All toys will be donated to the Southland Firefighters’ “Spark of Love” toy drive, sponsored by Metrolink and KABC Channel 7.

“Brag About Your Bag” Event November 25, Turn In Bags- Win Prizes

Community members are invited to participate in Los Angeles County’s “Brag About Your Bag” initiative. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, residents can bring five single use bags to the Albertson’s Grocery Store located at 27631 Bouquet Canyon Road to be entered to win great prizes and receive a free reusable bag.

Community members who bring five plastic bags to the participating Albertson’s Grocery Store will be eligible to win prizes, including lunch with NBA Champion Luke Walton, courtesy of 710ESPN. Two winners will also receive a trip to Miami, Fla., complete with hotel, airfare and $500 gift card, courtesy of Univision Radio’s KLOVE 107.5 FM and La Nueva 101.9 FM.

City of Santa Clarita Enables Hospital To Offer Physical Therapy Services On East Side Of Town

Thanks to the Santa Clarita City Council and a local developer, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital has received free office space in the Golden Valley Ranch Shopping Center. As part of the shopping center development agreement, the City Council required the developer to provide free space, which is valued at approximatly $60,000 per year, to the Hospital for the provision of medical services on the east side of town.

The new Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital outpatient physical therapy services in the Golden Valley Plaza opened to the public earlier this month. The new location at 19013 Golden Valley Road, Suite 125, includes 2,000 square feet of state-of-the-art therapy and treatment space with ample parking for patients.

“We’re very appreciative of the Santa Clarita City Council and the developer for providing this space to the Hospital at no charge so that we may offer convenient out-patient therapy services for our patients,” commented Roger Seaver, President/CEO for Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Sports Complex Phase IV Grand Opening Set For December 2

Two lighted basketball courts are some of the additions to the Sports Complex

The Phase 4 expansion of the City of Santa Clarita’s Sports Complex is set to open December 2 at 3:30  p.m. with a grand opening celebration. The  expansion includes two lighted outdoor basketball courts, the “Canine Country” Dog Park, a new seating area for the Aquatic Center, picnic areas and walkways as well as a renovated pedestrian plaza.

The Phase 4 expansion also included additional parking and a graded pad for the future gymnasium seen in the rendering above.

“Clothes for the Community” Program Recycles Garments, Helps Neighbors

The City of Santa Clarita, Waste Management and the Salvation Army are inviting community members to participate in a new and innovative program called Clothes for Community. The new mobile clothing drive allows community members to donate their gently used clothing to those in need, while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

There are two ways for community members to participate in Clothes for Community: drop-off or pick-up. For drop-off, residents may drop-off clothing to be donated at the specially-designated Salvation Army Drop Box, located at the Waste Management/Blue Barrel Yard at 25772 Springbrook Road, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.
