City Sponsors Food Drive For SCV Food Pantry, Donated Food Items Can Be Dropped Off At City Facilties

August 24, 2009

food pantry

The City of Santa Clarita is sponsoring its second annual Food Drive, benefitting the SCV Food Pantry. During the entire month of September, Santa Clarita residents are invited to drop off non-perishable food items to designated locations across the City to be donated directly to the SCV Food Pantry.

The Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry has been distributing food to low-income residents of the Santa Clarita Valley since 1986. It relies on donations from the community to provide supplemental food on a short-term basis to qualified, local residents. More than 900 local seniors receive food through the Food Pantry’s Senior Outreach Program and, in 2008, the organization distributed supplemental food to more than 5,500 Santa Clarita Valley residents, more than 2,000 of them children.

Collection bins for non-perishable food donations will be set up at five City facilities: City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard; the City’s Sports Complex, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway; the City’s Transit Maintenance Facility, located at 28250 Constellation Road; Central Park, located at 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road and the City’s Corporate Yard, located at 25663 Avenue Stanford.

***Publishers note: this post originally said that the project would begin next week, in actuality it will begin this evening.

The City will conduct a night-time overlay project on the east-bound side of Valencia Boulevard from the I-5 freeway to McBean Parkway beginning Monday, August 24. The work, part of the City’s annual Overlay and Slurry Seal Project, will be conducted at night to avoid disrupting busy day-time traffic. The Valencia Boulevard project is scheduled for completion on September 22.

This picture depicts similar overlay work being done in Newhall.

The road improvements will basically involve removal of the top layer of roadway and the repaving of fresh asphalt. The work is necessary to prolong the life of the road, prevent potholes and ensure a smooth ride through town.

"Alligatoring" is one sign that it's time to overlay a road. This patch also has a pothole that was filled in.

As roads wear through time they can inccur potholes and eventually show signs of “alligatoring.” Alligatoring refers to a pattern of cracks in the asphalt that resemble the scales of the reptile. The picture above shows why the improvements on Valencia Boulevard are necessary.
