Pictured is part of the area, near COC, that will be overlayed
***Publishers note: this post originally said that the project would begin next week, in actuality it will begin this evening.
The City will conduct a night-time overlay project on the east-bound side of Valencia Boulevard from the I-5 freeway to McBean Parkway beginning Monday, August 24. The work, part of the City’s annual Overlay and Slurry Seal Project, will be conducted at night to avoid disrupting busy day-time traffic. The Valencia Boulevard project is scheduled for completion on September 22.

This picture depicts similar overlay work being done in Newhall.
The road improvements will basically involve removal of the top layer of roadway and the repaving of fresh asphalt. The work is necessary to prolong the life of the road, prevent potholes and ensure a smooth ride through town.

"Alligatoring" is one sign that it's time to overlay a road. This patch also has a pothole that was filled in.
As roads wear through time they can inccur potholes and eventually show signs of “alligatoring.” Alligatoring refers to a pattern of cracks in the asphalt that resemble the scales of the reptile. The picture above shows why the improvements on Valencia Boulevard are necessary.

Cross-section of roadway
The cross-section of roadway above shows the inch, or so, of old roadway that will be removed for the slurry process to begin. Once the old road way is scraped away, the new layer of asphalt is layed down and smoothed over resulting in a smooth and problem free City street.
