Assemblyman Smyth to Co-Author Legislation Funding Domestic Violence Programs

State Assemblyman Cameron Smyth announced that he will be co-authoring, along with State Senator Leland Yee,  emergency legislation  to provide funding for domestic violence programs. The legislation would add $16.3 million from the Victim’s Compensation Fund to the Department of Public Health’s Domestic Violence Program for statewide use.

Smyth described the importance of the services domestic violence programs provide. The graph above represents the increase in clients served by the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley in the past five years.

City Councilmember Bob Kellar joined Assemblyman Smyth at the press conference and relayed the importance of domestic violence programs in general and emphasized the critical need the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley serves. Councilman Kellar recalled situations he witnessed first hand as a police officer with the LAPD  relating to the crime of domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley is holding a Golf Tournament, to raise funds, Monday August 17 at the exclusive Valencia Country Club. Old Town Newhall Streetscape Moving Towards Completion

The Old Town Newhall Streetscape project is moving along with great progress. Much of the work, which includes landscaping, hard-scaping, brickwork and boardwalks has been completed, although there is still much more to go. The Streetscape is anticipated to be completed in September. The pictures in this post were all taken this week.

Hundreds of plants are being added to the landscaping areas this week and include a variety of drought tolerant vegetation.

Don't Stop Believing plays this Saturday at Concerts in the Parks

Santa Clarita will welcome Journey tribute band with “Open Arms” this Saturday at 7 p.m. for the continuing Concerts in the Parks series, held at Central Park. With the resurgence in popularity of the Rock band Journey, concert-goers are urged to arrive early to find a good spot.

Concerts in the Parks is a free event held Saturday at 7 p.m. at Central Park through the end of August. Adding to this year’s event is Bristol Farms who will be on-site selling food from their “Extraordinary Food Store.” For those new to this free event, there’s also a helpful FAQ with tips and guidelines for attendees.
