June 26, 2009

Newhall Park is one of the older parks in Santa Clarita and likely has the tallest and most mature trees of any City Park.

The trees are so tall, they’re hard to photograph in their entirety, but they do provide an abundance of shade. Newhall Park is also home to Newhall Pool, which recently opened it’s summer season with the addition of a new slide.

Newhall Park always plays a large role in Santa Clarita’s 4th of July activities, it will be home to the 2009 Independence Day Classic, the  4th of July 5k run put on by the Santa Clarita Runners.

Postcard from the Past: Solemint Store in Canyon Country

Pictured (via SCVHistory.com) is a 1950s postcard of the Solemint Store in modern day Canyon Country. An additional post on SCVhistory.com, written by Jo Ellen Rismanchi, explains the interesting history of the area including celebrity sightings and reveals more details about the store:

At the southeast corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway stood the Solemint Store, opened in 1938 by Alfred Clark. A general store, it catered to the needs of local residents, particularly through the World War II years. Clark had connections that enabled him to provide black-market supplies such as black silk nylons, bubble gum, red meat and sugar. The store had a variety of dry goods, notions and collectibles — everything from canned foods and freshly butchered meat to nick-knacks.

One of the celebrity sightings included a film icon:

Another well-remembered “movie star sighting” at the junction occurred when Clark Gable came through for lunch with 20 or so of his pals, all of them riding motorcycles and all of them sporting fashionable leather jackets.

Old Town Newhall Streetscape Making Progress

June 23, 2009

Portions of the Old Town Newhall Streetscape project (phase 1) are nearing completion with several of the features finished. In the picture above you can see how the sidewalks and landscaping fit in with existing facades and how the brickwork interacts with existing Walk of Western Stars saddles. The bronze saddles had to be removed to facilitate construction, but a great deal of care was taken to put them back in their original locations.

All of the pictures included in this post were taken today.

The brickwork on the sidewalks go all the way up to the entryways of existing businesses.

planks

The picture above shows some of the wood planking used in the Streetscape design. The wood, called Ipe, is from South America and is extremely dense. In fact, according to the construction manager, the wood has the same hardness rating as concrete.

cross wk wballards

Above is a section of crosswalk. Prior to the Streetscape, the street dipped down for runoff which caused many vehicles, including some City transit buses, to bottom-out. The drainage problem was fixed with Streetscape improvements eliminating the need for crosswalk gutters and allowing for a smoother flow of traffic. Additionally, the cross-shaped groves on the right side of the picture allow for the placement of bollards, which can be used for temporary street closures during events. The bollards, in-effect, turn the street into a cul de sac.

Medium sized street trees are also an enhancement to the project. The trees that used to be located along Main Street were not approved street trees and caused problems with roots displacing areas of sidewalk. In many cases the trees are surrounded with  boulders for landscaping. Benches will also be part of the design.

Pictured above is one of the boulders, that will be used in the landscaping design, being moved down the street. The boulders were hand picked from a local quarry for smoothness and to fit in with existing improvements. This phase of construction for the Streetscape in Old Town Newhall will be cleaned up and ready for the 4th of July Parade, which will begin on Main Street.

Extreme Neighborhood Makeover Marks One Year Anniversary

June 22, 2009

It’s been one year since the City’s Extreme Neighborhood Makeover program was launched. Since the program began, thousands of residents have been introduced to services and resources to aid in keeping their neighborhoods clean and beautiful.

For one homeowner in Canyon Country living along Stillmore Street in the first “Makeover” area, the program helped him accomplish what he otherwise could not have done. His home and yard had come under disrepair and, though he was notified of code violations, he was unable to fix the problems because he is a senior citizen living on a fixed income. He asked for an extension, but City Community Preservation Officers went a step further; they found companies and volunteers to help the Santa Clarita resident for free.
