What do the movies Star Trek The Future Begins, Race to Witch Mountain and Twilight have in common? Besides being big hits? They all filmed  on-location in Santa Clarita. As  mentioned in an earlier post, Star Trek used the colorful Vasquez Rocks as the back drop for Spock’s home planet.  Additionally, parts of Race to Witch Mountain were filmed on the old Bermite site in the center of town.

Twilight used a couple of locations in Santa Clarita. The Hyatt Regency Valencia at Town Center Drive was the hotel in Phoenix, AZ where Bella and the Vamps hid out after fleeing the town of Forks. Also, the exterior for Bella’s mother’s house in Phoenix was shot near the Saugus Cafe.

In the case of Twilight the there’s an additional Santa Clarita connection. Taylor Lautner, who played Jacob Black, attended Valencia High.

Television and film production contributes millions of dollars to the local economy each year. To find out what other film and televison shows filmed in Santa Clarita check out the film website here.

SCVHistory.com is the resource for Santa Clarita Valley history on-line and has a pretty fascinating archive. Pictured above is George Campton’s General Store. According to SCVHistory.com:

Born in July of 1839 in the British West Indies, George Campton emigrated to the United States during the Civil War and married a 19-year-old native Californian named Gregeria. He opened Newhall’s first general store at the junction of modern-day Bouquet Canyon Road and Magic Mountain Parkway in September, 1876. A year and a half later, Campton and the rest of Newhall picked up and moved two miles south, to the corner of Railroad Avenue and Eighth Streets. Campton’s store housed the Newhall Post Office.
