Many of the City’s events would not be possible without the generous time given by volunteers. Some events, such as the Amgen Tour of California, literally require hundreds of volunteers in a single day. Volunteering offers a unique, behind the scenes look in to many exciting events.  To find out what volunteer opportunities are available with the City of Santa Clarita and other non-profits in the community click here.

With millions of dollars being spent in the local economy each year by the film and television industry, the City of Santa Clarita has put a lot of emphasis on being “film-friendly” with such practices as streamlined permit process, non-bureaucratic approach and low fees to make the Santa Clarita experience a good one for production companies. Click here to see who films in Santa Clarita.

Recently as part of its 21-Point Business Plan for Progress, the City added incentives to the list of reasons to film in Santa Clarita becoming one of the first and few cities to do so.

The Los Angeles Times wrote:

…At a time when government services are getting slashed and workers furloughed, most municipal governments around the country aren’t inclined to give up a revenue opportunity, no matter how small.

Not so in Santa Clarita, which is taking the unusual step of subsidizing film permits and location fees for productions that do most of their filming in the suburban community north of Los Angeles. The incentives also offer partial refunds of hotel taxes paid by production companies for workers…

Last year alone, City officials stated the economic impact of filming in the Santa Clarita Valley to be approximatly $20 million.

Santa Clarita lost one of its favorite citizens and 2007 Walk of Western Stars recipient Phil Rawlins this week. Tuesday members of his family, and long time friend Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste gathered at Rawlin’s Bronze Saddle in Old Town Newhall.

Rawlins was a lifelong cowboy, long time stunt man and director in the television and film industry. Rawlin’s personal story was written along-side the history of some of the most notable television and film productions of the last century. He doubled for Clint Eastwood in “Rawhide”, rode shotgun on the stagecoach in “Gunsmoke”,   as well as doubled for Randolph Scott, Robert Ryan, and Don Murray, the latter in “Bus Stop” which featured Marilyn Monroe.

Being a long time  resident of Santa Clarita, Rawlins witnessed many changes in the Santa Clarita Valley and even participated in the rodeo back in the 1950′s at Bonelli Ranch, which today is known as the Saugus Speedway.

SCVTV.com’s Newsmaker of the Week show has an excellent interview where Phil Rawlins talks about his fascinating life.
