The Western States Police & Fire Games are coming to Santa Clarita this summer from June 13 to June 20.  More than 5,000 police and fire personnel will participate in more than 50 sporting events being hosted in the Santa Clarita Valley and neighboring communities as part of this exciting annual event.

This Week In Santa Clarita gives a preview of the games

Events include everything from traditional sports like baseball, soccer, softball, volleyball, and football to sports like ultimate firefighter, weight lifting, karate, wakeboarding, dodge ball, archery, mud run, paintball, billiards, horseshoes, and more.

The City’s Sheriff’s Business Alliance Hosting Workshop Next Week on Protecting Auto Dealers from Theft

The City of Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Business Alliance hosts regular workshops to help businesses with everything from law changes to crime prevention. Picture above is a workshop held earlier regarding ABC laws.

Auto-dealers are invited to attend a free crime prevention workshop on Thursday, May 28  from 10 a.m. – 1:00p.m.  The seminar will provide attendees with information on ways to prevent identity theft in a vehicle purchase, introduction to the Red Flag Warning System, ways to prevent check fraud when purchasing a vehicle and how to stop bad deals before they impact their business. Future Lifeguards and Camp Counselors Processed to Finally Begin Summer Jobs

Summer Lifeguards and Camp Councelors recently completed paperwork to begin their summer jobs.

Lifeguard and Camp Counselor jobs are rewarding ways to join the workforce

This week, City of Santa Clarita staff met with newly hired Lifeguards and Camp Counselors to complete paperwork.  The recruitment period for these positions began in January with interviewing and testing taking place in March. Approximately 120 Lifeguards and 60 Camp Counselors will begin their jobs in June.

Six Flags Magic Mountain Provides Sneak Preview to Terminator Salvation: The Ride

Santa Clarita Valley’s own Six Flags Magic Mountain is counting down to the opening of it’s latest summer attraction, Terminator Salvation: The Ride. The ride will officially open this Saturday, May 23, but today members of the media and VIPs were invited to get a closer look.

SCV Sheriff Detective Bureau Opens, Sheriff Baca and Dignitaries Preside

Mayor Frank Ferry and Councilmember Marsha McLean were joined by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, SCV Sheriff’s Captain Anthony La Berge and dignitaries for the opening of the brand new Detectives Bureau located along Citrus near City Hall.

Sheriff Baca reflected on memories of being stationed at Wayside Honor Ranch (Pitchess Detention Center) 40  years ago when, ”no one (at the ceremony) lived here (Santa Clarita).”  Sheriff  Baca also lauded the work of the SCV Sheriff’s and expressed his appreciation to the detectives who will be moving into the facility. Notice the Sheriff’s new T3 Personal Mobility Vehicles behind the Sheriff.

 When all the words were spoken and plaques exchanged it was time to cut the yellow ribbon. If you look closely you’ll notice that the yellow ribbon is actually crime-tape.  And with that, the SCV Sheriff’s Detective Bureau has a new home.

Travelers using the Northbound I-5 exit at Magic Mountain Parkway will need to use a alternative ramp from May 31 to June 19

The northbound off-ramp of I-5 at Magic Mountain Parkway will be closed from May 31st to June 19 for the construction of ramp widening. Detours and more information can be found on the City’s website, which suggests using McBean, Valencia or 126/Newhall Ranch as detours for northbound motorists.

Construction to upgrade and widen the freeway bridge, ramps and some of the surrounding streets has been ongoing. Businesses surrounding the area are open for business.  A fact sheet on the project can be found here.

Around Town: Heritage Bear

If you’ve been to Valencia Heritage Park chances are you have seen the Heritage Bear. It’s a life sized replication of a California Grizzly Bear which were known to make the Santa Clarita Valley their home once upon a time.

This bear is part of the California Bear Project, whereby the City of Santa Clarita commissions an artist or group to creatively decorate a bear. The project is part of the City’s Art in Public Places program. This bear was done by local artist Scott Groller.

Pictures adorn the body of the bear. One half of the bear is covered with historic pictures as seen on the head above…

The other half of the bear is covered with pictures depicting modern day Santa Clarita.
