Reason to go to the Cowboy Festival #1: The Entertainment!

An amazing assortment of talent is at the Cowboy Festival

An amazing assortment of talent is at the Cowboy Festival

We’ve counted down the reasons to go to the Cowboy Festival. We’ve looked at the shopping, the activities for kids, the food and the location, but the number one reason to go to the Cowboy Festival is the performers!

Hot Club of Cowtown is a must see.

Some of the festival favorites include Hot Club of Cowtown,  a “smokin’” trio with sizzling guitar, fast paced songs and a great live act.

Over thirty performers on five stages will deliver world class enterainment all weekend long. There will be all kinds of Cowboy music and poetry from nationally known artists.

Another notable performer returning to the Cowboy Festival is the side-splitting cowboy poet  Baxter Black. Baxter is one of the finest storytellers you’ll ever hear.

Links to performers are on the City page, but the best way to find out more is to go to the Cowboy Festival this weekend and see for yourself.

It’s been a fun week counting down the top reasons to go. If you haven’t gone to the festival before here are a few tips:

- Wear comfortable closed toed shoes. Brand new boots can be painful to break in and flip flops aren’t great with the terrain of the street – it’s dirt.

- Dress for the weather. The festival is mostly outdoors, so bring your hat and put on some sun screen.

- There is an ATM on site and water. There are no firearms allowed, not even collector item pieces.

- You can get your tickets on-site at the festival shuttle site.

- Bring your camera. In past years they have not been allowed, but they’re ok now.

Hope to see you there!

Reason to go to the Cowboy Festival #2: Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio!

April 23, 2009
If only the street of Melody Ranch could talk.
If only the street of Melody Ranch could talk.

Number two on the City Briefs list of reasons to visit the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival is a chance to visit the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio. Melody Ranch is a virtual pantheon of film history, home to over well over 1000 feature films and television programs, and it’s only open to the general public once a year during the Cowboy Festival.

Melody Ranch is the perfect setting for a trip back to the old west.

Melody Ranch is the perfect setting for a trip back to the old west.

From the climatic showdown in High Noon, to the setting of Gunsmoke and most recently the HBO hit series Deadwood, you’ve likely aleady seen Melody Ranch hundreds of times and never even realized it. The History of Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio is as rich as it is extensive. [Click for SCVTV.com's Leon Worden's excellent "Newsmaker" interview with Andree and Renaut Valuzet about the ranch]

One of the great attractions at the ranch is the museum that’s open all weekend-long. The museum has amazing memorobialia from decades of production. It’s a must-see if you’re even the most causual fan of cinema.

ranch-1

Add festival-goers in full regalia and it’s like stepping back in time. Unlike some western movie sets or even ghoust towns, Melody Ranch looks more like a vibrant Dodge City in the middle of the gold rush. Another feature which differentiates the movie ranch is that the street is not lined with facades - the buildings have interiors too. Go into the saloon, and it’s a saloon. Go into the jail and you’ll find a cell. In fact, real live 21st century Sheriff’s use the jail as a base of operations to “keep the peace.”

Whether you’re among the Cowboy Festival faithful or a “first timer,” the experience of walking down the same street as movie legends like Gene Autry, John Wayne and yes, even Elvis Presly is worth the price of admission alone.

Reason to go to the Cowboy Festival #3: The Food!

If you are looking for savory cowboy grub, look no further than the Cowboy Festival.

If you are looking for savory cowboy grub, look no further than the Cowboy Festival.

As we continue to count down the reasons to go to the Cowboy Festival, we look at number 3. The food!

For many festival-goers the food is far and away the best part of the day while attending the Cowboy Festival . The food has been written about, talked about and is a big reason many people keep coming back. The Festival hosts standard fare such as kettle corn, but it’s the traditional “cowboy grub” that steals the show.

The Cowboy Cultural Committee’s good-old-fashioned Dutch Oven cooking is a festival standard.

beans

The beans are unbelievable. There’s something about cooking the “cowboy way” that sticks to your ribs and puts a smile on your face.

coffee

What’s cowboy grub without cowboy coffee? The coffee is good stuff. Cowboys even make brewing coffee cool…

food2

But the one thing that you’ll hear about from anyone who has ever been to the City of Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival; the thing that is discussed as much as anything else and why many would argue the food is the number one reason to go to the Festival is…

cobbler

…the peach cobbler. It’s out-of-this-world fantastic and well worth the trip.

The Buckaroo Book Shop is also new to the Festival this year. The are many books to browse and the actual authors will be reading aloud and signing books at the Buckaroo Story Time.

The blacksmith is always a kid favorite. For a small fee, they will personalize a name on a horseshoe before your very eyes.

lasso-kid

Plenty of western suprises await kids at the City of Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival. Festival goers should remember to dress for the weather and are best served wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes. Flip flops are not a great idea since the authentic western town has an authentic western street full of authentic old west dirt.

A unique characteristic about Main Street at Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio is that the store fronts aren’t just facades, they’re real buildings. The jail is a jail and this weekend the stores will be full of gear.
