The City has its eye on motorcycle safety

The City of Santa Clarita and the SCV Sheriff’s Station rolled out a new motorcycle safety campaign.  Check out mayordude.com for details and special offers.  Here are a few facts:

There were 50 traffic collisions involving motorcycles in our City with 10% resulting in a fatality. That’s a 39% increase over the previous year. It’s a fact that motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die in a traffic collision than someone riding in a car.

Rather than just remind motorcyclists to slow down, wear a helmet and be aware of their surroundings, the City is going several steps further. The City of Santa Clarita has reached out to local motorcycle shops, Nelson Motorcycle Training Center at College of the Canyons, local motorcycle shops, insurance companies and local law enforcement for participation.  The website has tips on safe driving.

Hopefully this campaign will reduce the number of motorcycle related accidents.  Drive safe!

The City’s “green” Transit Maintenance Facility, which received a “Gold” rating from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System in 2006, is a state of the art “green” building that allows the City to house, maintain and clean its fleet of buses.

Pictured above is the building during construction and after completion. Note in the construction photo the straw-bales used in the design of the wall. The straw-bale construction is one of the innovations that makes the Transit Maintenance Facility a “green” building.  For a tour, contact the Transit Maintenance Facility at 661-295-6300.

Own a Little Piece of Santa Clarita

April 28, 2009

 street-signs-old-sm

In 2008, the City of Santa Clarita replaced all of the street signs that had been hanging since Santa Clarita became a City in 1987. What happened to the old signs? They now are available for purchase on the City of Santa Clarita’s online store for those who want to emblazen their homes with an authenic piece of City history.

These are the same signs that rattled during the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, blew in the intense storm season in 2005 and provided points of reference through four presidential terms starting with President Reagan’s term.

Commuter service will open to North Hollywood and access the Red Line in August 2009

If you are one of the many people who enjoy a stress-free ride to work onboard one of the City of Santa Clarita Transit commuter buses, Thursday May 7 is your chance to offer your ideas about a new service.

In August 2009, Transit will launch a new commuter route to transport passengers to and from the Santa Clarita Valley and North Hollywood Red Line Station, which provides connections to Universal City, Hollywood, Van Nuys, Warner Center, local colleges, Union Station, areas in downtown Los Angeles, as well as many other Metro rail and bus lines.

The proposed commuter route could benefit Santa Clarita riders because it can cut up to 20 minutes off commute times, open commuter service to areas not currently served, and allow City Transit to offer more frequent service. The workshop is Thursday, May 7, at the Santa Clarita Community Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Around Town – Veteran’s Historical Plaza

In a new series, “Around Town,” City Briefs will occasionally post a picture of a thing or a  place around the City that some might not know about. Or maybe you’ve seen it, but don’t know the story.

Pictured is the Veteran’s Historical Plaza on Walnut Street in Old Town Newhall which opened Memorial Day 2005.  Before the Plaza was built, the site was basically a triangular shaped asphalt parking lot – except there was no parking. The City bought the uniquely shaped property and, through a big community effort you can read about here, transformed the land into a beautiful and fitting tribute to the men and women who served in the armed  forces. It’s one of the more distinctive properties in the City and is located near Hart Park.
