Oh Say Can You Sing? Santa Clarita Dodger Day Looking for National Anthem Singer

March 9, 2009
Besides being a great time, part of the proceeds from Santa Clarita Dodger Day benefit local schools and non-profits.

Santa Clarita Dodger Day is coming up on April 19 when Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Colorado Rockies. Each year, as the community gears up for the event, the search gets underway to find a local singer to perform the National Anthem in the pregame ceremony at Dodger Stadium. Auditions can be submitted via DVD or VHS video and all submissions must be received by the City of Santa Clarita by April 3. Once entries have been received the selection committee determines who will represent Santa Clarita at the game.

Santa Clarita Dodger Day is a great way to spend time with your friends and neighbors and part of the proceeds go towards local non-profits and schools.

City of Santa Clarita Pursues Federal Stimulus Dollars

March 9, 2009

The City is aggresively pursuing funds to build needed infrastructure which will provide jobs and boost the local economy. (Pictured is a constuction photo of the now finished, Golden Valley Road bridge.)

In an effort to assure that Santa Clarita receives any and all funding available, the City has put together an inter-departmental task force at City Hall that will research, apply for and otherwise make sure that Santa Clarita receives every dime of stimulus funds possible. The goal, in securing these stimulus dollars for Santa Clarita, is to bring money into the community and to help spur new jobs.

The new money being spent in Santa Clarita is anticipated to have far-reaching benefits for the community.  Stimulus funds help provide needed infrastructure, additional jobs and the multiplier effect of dollars being spent locally. The City’s highest priority is to work with all of the local, regional, state-wide and national entities to partner and identify projects for Santa Clarita that result in bringing money to the community and finance greatly needed public projects.

Mayor Ferry and Councilmember Bob Kellar helped cut the ribbon for the new Target store in Canyon Country.

The New Target at the Plaza at Golden Valley is now open! The store held a Very Important Guest (VIG) Night on Tuesday, March 3rd which was attended by future shoppers from the community. The Plaza at Golden Valley is the new Shopping Center located at the intersection of the 14 Freeway and Golden Valley Road. Mayor Frank Ferry and Councilmember Bob Kellar were both on-hand for the ribbon cutting and Mayor Ferry was the first official shopper.

The Target store has been a highly anticipated addition to the east side of Santa Clarita. It is hoped, because of it’s convenient location off of the 14 freeway, that travelers through the Valley will stop and shop, which will contribute to the City’s sales tax base. Retaining sales tax dollars in the City of Santa Clarita is essential to providing roads, public safety, recreation and other services in the community.

On Sunday, March 8, the store will have special sales to coincide with the grand opening.

Saugus Action Committee Busy in the New Year

March 3, 2009

The Saugus Action Committee (SAC) continues to meet regularly and work on issues of importance to residents of Saugus.   At the January meeting, City Community Preservation staff came to speak with SAC prior to the Extreme Neighborhood Makeover on January 10.  SAC was very receptive to the idea and participated in the event by staffing a booth to distribute information about the work of SAC.  They were excited that so many Councilmembers and City staff stopped by their booth to say hello and lend support to Saugus neighborhood and SAC efforts.  SAC was thrilled by the event, and they were grateful that the City is committed to beautification efforts in Saugus and other neighborhoods.

SAC is once again working with City staff to help implement the spring Eggstravaganza, which will be held on April 11.  Their work is limited to the Eggstravaganza at Central Park; other locations for the event are Canyon Country Park and Valencia Glen Park.  SAC is working on getting donations of eggs and candy for the event.  On the day of the event, SAC will set up, run the event, and provide someone to wear the Mr. E. Bunny costume.  This year, SAC decided that it would be nice to add a canned food drive to the event as a way to help fellow Santa Claritans who may be having a tough time.  The SCV Food Pantry has been contacted, and they are happy to be associated with the event.

The Saugus Action Committee meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the City Hall Orchard Rooms located on the first floor.

Santa Clarita Activity Center under construction.

Before being transformed into a state-of-the-art gathering place, the original Activities Center building was owned and operated by cosmetics giant Merle Norman. The exterior of the building and structural supports are all that remain of the old warehouse.
