Santa Clarita now has its own historic preservation ordinance. At the September 9 City Council meeting, Agenda Item #9: SECOND READING AND ADOPTION OF AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT CODE FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION REVIEW, generated some discussion and was ultimately passed by a vote of 3-2 with Councilmembers Weste, McLean and Ender voting yes and Mayor Kellar and Mayor Pro Tem Ferry voting no. This item had its first reading at the August 26 regular City Council meeting under a Public Hearing. This amendment to the Unified Development Code allows the City to review projects that might impact the City’s historical resources.

New Newhall Library
September 9, 2008The first public workshop held on August 20, 2008 for the Downtown Newhall Public Library project involved hands-on group exercises, which challenged the creativity of the participants to provide preliminary site plan studies for the proposed Old Town Newhall Public Library. Additionally, participants were asked their opinions on a number of pre-selected images pertaining to library design and the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan. The goal of this particular exercise was to determine a schematic direction for the ultimate look and feel of the library site and building. The workshop culminated with a priorities board establishing the visual hierarchy of the design elements and concepts for the new library. Approximately 30 to 40 member of the public attended the first public workshop. The next public workshop will be held on September 30, 2008 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Hart Hall at the William S. Patrolling this off road environment had been a daunting task for Santa Clarita deputies, as patrol cars are not equipped for all-terrain driving. With the generous gift from Frontier Toyota of a new 2008 Toyota Tundra 4×4 truck, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station has a new resource to help keep the community safe. Cont.
